Holiday parades light up weekend Dan Craft dcraftpantagraph.com In terms of the Christmas season, the parade's not gone by. In fact, it's just beginning. But if you're talking literal parades, the kind with floats, marching bands and that fat jolly elf from up North bringing up the rear this weekend and next are where the high-stepping action is.

In fact, this Thanksgiving weekend alone, a half-dozen processions will be wending their way through Central Illinois. And half of those will be after-dark, plugged-in affairs. The biggest of the weekend's offerings is downtown Peoria's 127th annual Santa Claus Parade, which also bills itself as "the longest running holiday parade in the United States." The procession steps off at 10:15 a.m. Friday in front of the Peoria Central Firehouse at Monroe and Bryan streets downtown and proceeds to the Peoria County Courthouse. Grand marshal is veteran Peoria jazz entertainer Jimmy Binkley and special parade guest is Bob Larson, the retiring WMBD news anchor who has been announcing the parade on its telecast for 41 years.

Also set for Friday is Pontiac's 15th annual Christmas Light -Up Parade, which will cast its glow over a 10 -block downtown area beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a "Winter Wonderland" theme. In addition to lighted floats, the procession will feature Santa and the Mrs. in horse-drawn carriage, debarking at the Santa house on the downtown square for his annual seasonal visits. Come Saturday, fans steps off at 10 a.m.

Dec. 6 at Kingsley Junior High School in Normal and heads south to the downtown Bloomington Square, with floats, bands and Santa in tow. Also starting at 10 a.m. Dec. 6 is Fairbury's Christmas Parade downtown, which signals a day-long festival of events and activities, followed by the annual Christmas in Minier Parade at 2 p.m.

also part of a day-long festival of events. Last but not least: the annual LeRoy Christmas Parade, which begins at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 on Center Street at the high school and works its way through downtown to Kiwanis Park. of illuminated parades have still more options, including Champaign's Parade of Lights, now in its 14th year.

It kicks off at 6 p.m., following pre -parade entertainment at various locations at 5 p.m. and free "hot chocolate stations" filling cups at 5:30 p.m. The parade itself features lighted floats, bands, candy and Santa, and is climaxed at One Main Plaza in downtown Champaign with a tree-lighting ceremony. On Saturday, holiday parade fans will have some tough choices to make, with four options around the area. Casting a glow for the occasion on Saturday is Streator's Light Up Streator party, beginning at 10 a.m.

downtown and in City Park, and climaxing with the third annual Lighted Parade at 7 p.m. downtown and Midnight Madness, in which vendors will be selling goods from 8 p.m. to midnight at Park Place and Bruce Township Hall. Unplugged parade offerings on Saturday include Paxton's Christmas Parade, which steps off at 2 p.m. downtown, and Clinton's Christmas Parade, which begins at 2 p.m.

downtown, and is followed by the opening of Santa's House on Mr. Lincoln's Square. Bringing up the season's rear guard next weekend (Dec. 4-7) are the remaining area processions, both plugged and unplugged. Definitely plugged are Lincoln's Annual Christmas Parade, which switches on at 5:30 p.m.

Dec. 4 and and heads through downtown to Pulaski Street; Dwight's Christmas Parade, which gets lit at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 downtown; and Minonk's Christmas Parade of Lights, following suit at 6:30 p.m. Dec.
