However, I feel your assessment of the recent sit-in demonstration at Northwestern University Is in error. As you stated, the occupation of the university business office was effected by a small group of Negro students H0 to be exact. But that number constitutes ninety percent of the total number of Negro undergraduates at Northwestern.

This clearly reflects a common dlssatlsfact- ton with racial conditions as they exist on campus and no doubt In Evanston as well. Furthermore, their demands with one or two exceptions were really not so objectionable. In fact, sllgbtly better than half were finally greed to and two of these were already planned for Institution next fall. Without question, the least palatable request was that for separate housing facilities for black students. Even this Is not so distasteful when given a second thought.

Successful Integration can only occur in a climate of mutual respect based on quiet pride In the abilities and accomplishments of both races. Until now, Negroes have been Isolated at Northwestern partly by virtue of their small numbers. As a result they have been sub- and Mrs. H. J.

And, Jected to the subtle Indignities and exclusions of a group oriented university which regrettably has no student union and sponsors but two all campus events a year. Some of them are lonely and prefer living together, not to exclude others but to further build on that self respect so desperately needed. The use of sit-ins and of force to gain ones objectives Is deplorable. But It would be no more excusable for officials to physically remove and arrest previously well behaved students without first considering the effectiveness of preexisting channels of communication and if faulty, making an attempt to find common ground.

Then at least the administration could say It tried to be reasonable. An agreement In this case was reached and the students were warned that future such protests would be sternly disciplined. Northwestern officials succeeded where those of other universities failed. Their conduct during the affair was exemplary. The rebellious students filed out of the building leaving tt Impeccably clean and offering to pay for any unintentional dam age.
