And as the winning streak continued, the high blood pressure antics of Illinois State's Cardiac Kids continued also. The Uedbirds scored 20 points in the second half to wipe out a 7-3 haiftime deficit, but then had to hold on for dear life as the Sycamores rallied to score a touchdown in the final two minutes and threatened to make things even more uneasy in the last minute before a roughing the-kicker penalty shattered their comeback hopes. The three consecutive victories the first time the Uedbirds have accomplished that trick since the first three games of the 19G9 season give Illinois State a 4-2 season record. But the interesting fact shows Redbird victory margins of four, three, Jl and four points, respectively, in those triumphs. Sweet victory And one of the two Illinois State losses was a 10-9 decision at the hand of Southern Illinois.

But Saturday's win at Indiana Slate before a Homecoming crowd of 16,208 at Memorial Stadium was particularly sweet for the Redbirds. An Illinois State team had not defeated the Sycamores in the past 20 years, the last victory being a 27-7 decision in 1011. "It was a great win for us a great total effort," said Bitcon. "Our kids really outplayed them." The Redbirds played well indeed, holding an edge on the Sycamores in every offensive category. Ron Bell, heralded as an All-American candidate before the season but certainly a disappointment through Illinois Slate's first five games, played superbly at running back.

Bell rushed for 192 yards In 30 carries, and It was bis running which enabled the Redbirds to control the football much of the afternoon. Illinois Stale ran off CO plays to only 5(i for Indiana Slate. Previously, Bell had netted only 53 yards In 32 carries through his team's first five games. And quarterback Steve Mardis, Injured three games ago and sidelined with a shoulder separation, directed the Red-bird offense with class, passing for HI yards on 10 completions in 38 attempts. Bitcon was pleased with the coolness of Mardis and couldn't say enough shout Bell.

a The Redbird offense took charge in the third quarter as Mardis moved the team 61 yards to paydirt on the first series after the kickoff with Bruce Elliott's four-yard run producing the six-pointer with less than five minutes gone. Moments later, Illinois State defensive back Ron Koesler intercepted a Roger Voorhis pass at the Redbird 45 and returned it to the Indiana State 48. Dungan recovers With Bell carrying six times in nine plays for 33 yards, Illinois State moved in to score again as Bell plunged over the final yard. The clock showed 5:56 to play in the third period and the Redbirds led, 17-7. Less than four minutes later, Indiana State scored on Willie Lee's three-yard run.

But the Redbirds got that touchdown back late in the fourth quarter on Mardis' two-yard run. Andy Duncan's recovery of a fumble after Voorhis' complete pass to Mika (Ad) Vance set up Illinois Stale's final i TD on the Sycamore 26 yard line. Indiana State, however, bounced back. Voorhis completed five passes as the Sycamores moved 55 yards to score again. Allen ran the final three yards for the touchdown and as a pass for two conversion points failedIllinois State i maintained the 23-10 advantage with 1:34 to play.
