Finley, A's Bury Hatchet NEW YORK (AP) Charles Finley and his Kansas City Athletics' players have buried the hatchet and restored, at least temporarily, the serenity of baseball's player-owner relationship. The feud ended Tuesday after 20 hours of unprecedented meetings with Commissioner William D. Eckert when the Major League Player's Association dropped its unfair labor practices charges filed against the controversial Finley. In return, Finley, owner of the A's, agreed not to interfere with the right of his players to air grievances in an orderly manner. Thus, what started as a test case of the labor-management relationship in baseball, with Olympic Track Coach Named LOS ANGELES (AP)-Payton Jordan of Stanford will coach the United States men's track and field team in the 1968 Olympics at Mexico City.

Art Lentz, general manager of the Olympic Committee, announced the appointment of Jordan Monday night. Assisting Jordan will be Stan Wright of Western Illinois, Joe Oelkers, Tulane, Frank Potts, Colorado, and Ted Hayden, Chicago. Bill Bowerman of Oregon was named coordinator of the Olympic high altitude development program for next year. Mike Portanova of Los Angeles was named track team manager of the Olympics. Giants Waive Chuck Mercein NEW YORK (AP) Fullback Chuck Mercein, the New York Giants' leading rusher last season, was placed on waivers by the National Football League club Tuesday.

The move enabled the Giants to get down to the mandatory 40-player limit. Mercein, the Giants' No. 3 draft choice in 1965, gained 328 yards in 94 carries last year and was their fifth leading pass receiver with 27 caught for 152 yards. He also did some field goal kicking. Crawford Sidelined With Tendon Sprain MCGUIRE AFB, N.J.

(AP) Fred Crawford, making his third try to make the roster of the New York Knickerbockers, was sidelined Tuesday with a sprained tendon in his right ankle. The former St. Bonaventure star, stopped by a broken hand last season, will be out of for several days, doctors said. Walt Bellamy, the lone unsigned Knick, is in the area and still dickering with club officials, and Cazzie Russell is due to arrive Wednesday. Roman Line Colts Sold At Keenland LEXINGTON, Ky.

Bwamazon farm paid $31,000 for a bay colt by Roman Line out of Dark Complexion for the high price of the afternoon session. The owner was Melvin Carter. A Karsland farm gray colt by Roman Line out of Close Play brought $28,000 from O.T. Hagan.

CCIW Like Augustana should repeat College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin football champion, a poll of coaches of the seven competing teams indicated today. The Vikings weren't picked for worse than a tie for first by any of the coaches of the other six teams and were tabbed to take the top position alone on four ballots. In ranking the teams in 1-2-3-4-5-6 order, coaches didn't include their own teams in the rankings. Augustana totaled points on the basis of six points for a first place, five for second, etc. Carthage, which shared second place with North Central and Illinois Wesleyan a year ago, ranked second with points.

Wesleyan received 26 points, North Central 21, Carroll Millikin and North Park 8. The Pantagraph 13 Bloomington-Normal, Ill. Sept. 13, 1937 Flu Bug Hits Titan Camp Finley indirectly representing the major league owners he has long antagonized, ended quietly in compromise. In a prepared statement, Commissioner Eckert said the parties agreed to settle future differences "by mutual discussion rather than by resorting to news media." Fear of retaliation had led the A's to request the meeting with Eckert, who adjourned the gathering Monday with the avowed purpose of bringing peace before the situation reached the National Labor Relations Board.

The Players Association, represented by its director, attorney Marvin Miller, had accused Finley of threatening and coereing players in trying to get them to withdraw their complaints. The commissioners' statement, however, said Finley denied contemplating "future action against the players or any of them as a consequence of this dispute. "Should a player in the future believe that retaliatory action is being taken against the statement continued, "nothing herein shall interfere with his right to process a grievance." The commissioner also scheduled for review the suspension by Finley of pitcher Lew Krausse. A hearing on that matter was set for Sept. 28.

It was Krausse's, suspension Aug. 18 for an alleged drinking incident on an airplane that touched off a chain reaction of moves which brought into the open the grievances and left the baseball world agog. 34 31 87 34 Redbirds' Deep Defenders Illinois State University's candidates for the defensive Robyn Chapman. secondary gather with backfield coach Gerry Hart, Tresenriter, Jeff former Southern Illinois University star who coached at Zaeske. Debusschere was in the third year of a $100,000 contract as player-coach. The Pistons said the new pact gives Debusschere $200,000 over the next five years.

Debusschere, who starred at the University of Detroit, now is in his sixth season with the Pistons. He has an over-all average of 15.7 points and hit his career highs both in scoring, 18.2 points, and rebounding, 924, last season. Both Debusschere and Pistons General Manager win Coil said the new contract should spike any talk that either would prefer Debusschere playing elsewhere since he gave up his coaching duties to Dennis Butcher. Absent for the second day were John Thorne, regular fullback, and J.

The Redbirds hope to have the same kind of watchful Fifth of Series troling by their defensive backs this season. A good many sophomores may be breaking into the backfield, but State still has three of the leading five defensive backs available. The only loss by graduation was that of Tom Major, now coaching at Le Roy High School. Injuries Hurt Returnees The Redbirds also are without Gerry Sytar, a Batavia junior who is in school but is recovering from injuries suffered in a car accident. Still, they have several proven performers to go with a fine group of sophomore prospects.

One of the returnees, senior Arnie Giles (Nyack, N.Y.), won all-Interstate Conference honors as the roving "strong" safety. Right now he's running behind a trio of sophomores because of missing several early practices, but he is rapidly rounding into shape. Backfield Coach Offers Praise Another returnee, senior Art Newbrough (Highland Park), was the starting "free" safety last season and was outstanding on pass defense. His 48- yard runback of an interception shortly before halftime probably was the game breaker in ISU's upset of Northern Illinois. Still another veteran is junior Jeff Holden (Alton), who has good reactions and saw some newcomers, but backfield coach Gerry Hart thinks they have good ability.
