The family has suggested that any expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the United Methodist Church, Mrs. May Heyen LINCOLN (PNS) Airs, May Ruth Heyen, 69, of rural Mid. dietown, died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be at 2 p.m.

Saturday at Middletown Methodist Church, with the Rev. John C. Osborne and the Rev. Funk officiating. Burial will in Elmwood Cemetery near Greenview.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln. She will be taken to the church at noon Saturday. She was born April 15, 1900, in Mason County, daughter of Miles and Daisy Faulkins Sluser. Her marriage to Henry Heyen took place at Middletown in September, 1945.

Bode LINCOLN (PNS) Erwin H. Bode, 71, of 308 Willard, died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. He had farmed 30 years in McLean County retired five years ago after being employed 20 years at Lincoln State School. His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m.

Saturday at St. Mary's Church. with the Rev. Edward H. Westerman officiating.

He was born Feb. 1. 1899 at Fisher, son of Andrew and Barbara Bachman Eyer. He married Matilda Springer on July 10, 1918 at Fisher. Mr.

Eyer farmed for 36 years near Colfax before his retirement last year. Survivors are his wife: daughter, Mrs. Leo Colfax: three sons. Harold, Chet and Orville, all of Anchor: half brother, the Rev. J.

Eyer in death. He was a member of the Gibson City Bible Church and was organizer of the Victory Kids 4-H Club at Colfax. Mrs. Wihlie Miller ARMINGTON (PNS) Mrs. Wihlie Miller, 95.

of Auburn, formerly of Armington, died Wednesday morning Memorial Hospital in Springfield. She had been in failing health for several months. Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Auburn. Burial will be in the Auburn Cemetery.

She was born May 31, 1874 Eminence Township, Logan County, the daughter of William and Mary Gaddis Howser. She was married to George Miller who preceded her in death. Survivors are a son. Clifford. and a daughter, Mrs.

Faye Quisenberry, both of Auburn. Three grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Miller was a member of the Christian Church.

She had lived in Auburn for about 30 years. MASON CITY (PNS) Mrs. Mae Bennett, 81, of Easton died at 11 Wednesday at Elmwood Nursing Home, Beardstown. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cain Funeral Home, Mason City, the Rev.

Ira Childs officiating. Burial will be in Walkers Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 7 o'clock tonight. She was born Jan. 30, 1888, at Easton, a daughter of Bolin and Mattie Cantral Marcum.

She. was married to Charles Bennett Sept. 12, 1904, in Havana. He died March 11, 1965. Surviving are four sons, Russell, Pittsfield; Wayne, Easton; Lloyd and Arthur, both of Louisville.

By June Pantograph Staff Writer PEKIN- Joe Gibson, who is accused of murdering a mall, took the witness stand Thursday afternoon to testify in his 008 behalf.

He is charged with one count of murder and one count manslaughter in the death of Otis Coffey, who died Sept. 27, Coffey never regained sciousness after being allegedly hit in the head by Gibson in the Lots House Tavern July 23, 1969 Coffey Belligerent Gibson testified he went to the Lots House tavern about 3:30 or 4 p.m. July 33 with Larry Mayer and Mrs. Carol Jean Harris. The three of them sat at table, he related, and Oley Coffey came to their table and said, -What are you doing here? 1 don't like you and don't want you to drink where am." Gibson related that Coffey came back again from the bar to their table and asked Stayer if he wanted to fight.

Mayer replied, on, Otey, don't want any The group was then joined by Dillard Sams, Joe Doolen and a man called Little Al. Coffey returned to the table four times, related Gibson, and said to Sams, "1 bear you're tough. Coffey put his hand on Gibson's shoulder and -1'm going to hurt you before you Gibson asked. He said Coffey replied, don't like you. Wanted Te Leave Gibson then related that he asked Larry Mayer to go because he knew there'd be trouble.

Mayer, who testified later. said he didn't want to leave because he was trying to make a date at the bar with Mrs. Shirley King, Coffey asked Joe Gibson it he had a gun or knife and Gibson replied, "1 don't have no gun." Otey's rejoinder purportedly was, "you better have one." It was at this point that Gibson saw the butt of gun protruding from Coffey's right hand front pants pocket, he said. Gibson told the court that he hit Coffey three times after he saw the butt of the gun. Bar Stool After the third blow, he retreated toward the tavern door.

When Coffey was about to lunge at him, he told the court that he picked up a bar stool, held it in defensive motion, and plunged it like that," making a forward motion with the stool. He then dropped the bar stool and ran out the door, he said. Gibson told the court that he was born in Pineville, in 1944 and that he had served 18 months in a state reformatory S. in Kentucky for breaking and entering when he was 16. When Gibson told the court his daughter's name.

he dropped his head and tears came to his eyes. His wife, Marcella, and 6-year-old daughter, Carolyn, have been in the courtroom since the trial began Monday. Mrs. Gibson cried throughout her husband's testimony. Slightly Built Testimony revealed that of Gibson.

Bloomington Man's Mother Dies Mrs. Vera Douglas, 74, of St. Clair. the mother of Loren L. Douglas, 713 W.

Walnut, died at 1 a.m. Friday at a Washington. hospital. She had been ill about a year. Mrs.

Douglas was a frequent visitor in Bloomington at the homes of her son and grandson. James L. Douglas, 1306 N. Oak. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Monday at the Casey and Lenox Funeral Home, St. Clair. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.

Driver Sentenced To Seven Days Edward E. Winston. 22, Chicago, was sentenced Friday to seven days in the McLean County jail after pleading guilty in magistrate court to driving while his operator's license was suspended. Winston was arrested about 1 a.m. Friday by state police.

Christmas Lights Stolen From Tree Three sets of Christmas lights and an extension cord were stolen from a tree in front of the T. A. Metzler home at 5 Continental Court Wednesday or Thursday. Mrs. Metzler told police that the loss was estimated at $20.

She insisted, under cross examination, that she did see a pistol in Otey's pocket. The pistol was flat, with walnut handle and was blue black, she told the court. Cross examination revealed that Mrs. Hepner, who receives Aid to Dependent Children funds and aid from her parents, was spending the afternoon drinking the Lots House tavern, and prior to that, at the Four Aces tavern in East Peoria Funds fer Drinking? Bernard Oltman, state's at. torney, asked Mrs.

Hepner, "do your parents provide money for support of your child or for you drinking the support of my child," answered Mrs. Hepner defensively. Sirs, Carol Jean Harris, Portland, formerly of Peoria, testified that she beard Coffey say to Gibson, "I'm going to kill you." Cross examination by Oliman revealed that she had heard this state men! while she was the restroom at the opposite end of the room, and above the blaring of the jukebos. Larry Mayer, boilermaker, testified that he accompanied Joe Gibson July 23 to the Lots House tavern with Mrs. Harris.

Coffey was bugging Joe Gibson" and was drunk. starting he tald the court. Mayer also told the court that Coffey had threatened to kill Gibson Coffey Ran Into Steel Colley ran into the bar stool that Gibson put up as defense, related Stayer. Colley was lunging at Joe from a crouching position with both hands clutching for him, he added. Mayer related that Coffey also threatened Gibson by saying.

"I'm going to get you Slayer admitted, under crOsSe examination. that he was frequent patron of taverns, and was acqauinted with drunks, Stayer added, it hadn't been for my broken jaw, I'd be sitting where Joe Gibson is now." He related that he didn't want to fight because he had broken jaw. He said "someone hit me with an entrenching Stayer told the court that Gibson was danger any time a man that big (as big as Coffey) got hold of him." In his epening statement Thursday defense attorney Paul Slavens told the jury that he intended to prove that Coffey was belligerent and aggressive that July 23 in the Lets House tavern and attempted to pick several fights, Self He said he would prove that Coffey had pistol and that Gibson acted in self defense because Coffey was going shoot him. Other witnesses were William Doolen of East Peoria and Dillard Same, Doolen related that Colley came to the Gibson table and said, looking for trouble." He added that Coffey came back to the table 10 minutes later and said, "I've got a gun." Coffey was drunk," according to Doolen. Same, East Peoria, related that be also was in the Lots House tavern and that Coffey approached him with, -1 hear you're tough." Coffey and Gibson were arguing, according to Same, and Coffey was "cussing.

He concluded that Gibson tried to turn away from Coffey and that be. Sams, left Lots House about 5 p.m. The trial is being held Tarewell County Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Ivan to, Vontz. Local Businessman, Hugh Darling, Dies Hugh Darling. 67, of 1 28 White Place, a partner in the Rettick and Darling Builders, and Bloomington businessman for more than 30 years, was found dead in bed at his home at 7 a.th.

Friday, McLean County Deputy oner Clyde Hibbens estimated the time of death at 3 a.m. Mr. Hibbens said Mr. Darling had been under a doctor's care for a heart ailment. IWU Graduate Mr.

Darling was a 1921 duate of Havana High School, Havana, and a 1925 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University where he was affiliated with Sigma Chi Fraternity. He taught at both Towanda and Cooksville schools and was assistant superintendent for McLean County Schools around 1930. Mr. Darling owned and operated the Darling and Fish and Poultry market at 218 Center from the early through 1956. Brokerage Firm In 1959 he became associated with Darling.

Wack and Jensen, a stock brokerage firm with offices in the Unity Building. Mr. Darling became a partner Kenney Mr. and Mrs. Walter Amberg Florissant.

His parents and four brothers preceded him in death. EL PASO (PNS) The funeral of Max Smith, 78, El Paso banker for many years who died Wednesday will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Vincent Memorial Home with the Rev. Warren Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the memorial home. Mr. Smith was employed by the former First National Bank of El Paso for 23 years and by the county highway office at Eureka for eight years. He was assistant cashier at the El Paso National Bank for 19 years, retiring in 1963.

He was also secretary of the El Paso Building and Loan Association for 50 years and served 40 years as El Paso township clerk. He was born Oct. 19. 1891 in El Paso, a son of Levi Franklin and Laura Arnold Smith. He married Litta Mohler April 21, 1915 in El Paso.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Ann Hirst, Towanda: Mrs. Patricia Jean Skarr. Oak Park: seven grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Chicago Music College and played the violin. He gave private violin lessons as an avocation. He also originated the presentation of the "Messiah" in El Paso, and directed it for several years. He was a long-time member of the Bloomington-Normal Symphony.
