Kennedy.

But for a boy in Bloomington, a telephone call from Mr. Kennedy before the flight will remain something entirely unique. Some of the details of the late President's visit here in October, 1959,. were recalled for Pantagrapn readers Friday and Saturday. Newspapers across the country went to their files for stories of similar visits.

and Mrs. Lawrence Irvin of 503 Moore. On the morning of Oct. 24, 1959, the boy's parents went to the Bloomington airport to await the arrival of the senator and his party. Terry remained at home with a sister, Jane.

The day was windy and rainy. At Chicago Senator Kennedy was planning to fly here with his party of more than 12 in the large Convair airplane he was using. But because of the weather, the senator chartered a small plane that could land at Bloomington and headed south. The rest of the Kennedy party went to Springfield in the Convair. It was well after the scheduled arrival time and as Lawrence Irvin remembers it, the day seemed too dismal even for ducks to land. State police had reported the senator's regular airplane was circling the airport at Springfield waiting for a break in the weather. The police report was enough to disperse the crowd at Bloomington in the belief that Senator Kennedy had gone to Springfield. But before Mr.

Irvin left, he received word of the senator's call to his home. Recalls Call Terry, then 10, answered the telephone. As Terry remembers the call, it was something like this: "Is your father there?" "No. He and my mother are at the airport waiting for Senator Kennedy." "This is Senator Kennedy. Would you tell your father I'll be there?" Standing instructions to the Irvin children were that if anything important ever came up in their parents' absence, the children were to go next door to tell Mrs.

John Bliss about it. "Terry was a little nonplussed about the call," as Mr. Irvin recalled it Saturday, "so I think Jane picked up the ball. "And I think Mrs. Bliss had trouble believing that Senator Kennedy really had talked to Terry, but she called the airport anyway." With the message relayed, Mr.

Irvin said he was confident that Bloomington would be able to greet the senator after all.
