A fish shocking demonstration at' the ISU farm pond this week indicated that the fish population was way down, and what was there was very inferior in both size and species. Gorge Zebrun, fish biologist with the state department of conservation, found that chief cause of present fish situation is heavy silling since the pond was built in 1961. Where the pond was originally about 12 feet deep, it is now about four feet.

Shallowness of the pond has resulted in heavy winter-kill of fish. A good chance of summer-kill exists also due to lack of cool, deep water. Zebrun recommended the pond be dredged to its proper depths, kill out existing fish, and restock with proper balance of species. A thorough shocking only yielded about five small carp along with about a dozen very small bluegills. The pond was built originally as a water source for livestock.

It now furnishes water for the beef herd only. In order for the dairy to maintain its Class A rating, all water there must be from the deep well located near the dairy barn. Both dairy and hog farm use well water now. Zebrun works out of Department of Conservation office in Dwight, and covers 12 counties. Livingston Hit By Leaf Beetle PO.NTIAC A preliminary report indicates that the cereal leaf beetle has migrated to most of the townships on the eastern side of Livingston County.

The cereal leaf beetle is a serious pest of grain crops. Damage is done by both larvae and adults. Adults attack grain shoots and the larvae chew out long strips between leaf veins.
