Iirry Closcn won the three-mile, Alan Taylor and Lindberg tied in the mile, Rich Shelhamcr was first in the shot. Doug Malin.sky won the triple jump and the long jump, while Steve Painter finished first in the javelin and Dale Janssen was best in the discus. ISU won nine of 15 of the individual events. The meet was ISU's last home meet and gave the Keclbirds a 1-2 record for outdoor dual meets.

Ind. -I'sing 16 walks to stay alive, Ball Stale finally nudged Illinois State, 8-7, in 13 innings, but the Redbirds came back to win the nightcap in seven innings. 4-1, for a Midwestern Conference split Saturday. Freshman Larry Bullington delivered a two-out single to drive in pinch runner Dick Collins to end the opener.

Dennis Reedy, pinch-hitting for Lynn Jackson, drew a walk from Terry McFadden to get the inning started. Collins ran for Reedy and took second on a sacrifice. ISU took a 7-6 lead in the 11th when McFadden was safe on an error and scored, after a sacrifice, on another error. Bullington kept Ball State alive with another two-out single to drive in Joe Mason, who had earlier singled and moved to second on a sacrifice. Bullington had three hits in five trips to the plate in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Redbirds bunched all three of their hits in the fifth inning to produce four runs. After two walks pitcher Bob Housman drove in one run with a single, before Tom Monschcin and Mark Chuvola followed with singles to score three more runs.
