THE PANTAGRAPH, Friday, July 7, 1989 Btf Arbuckles look for Highland edge Notos I and Butch Thompson, Tim Lane and Bryan Cox, and Greg She-pard and Mark Weaver. What score will it take to qualify for the championship flight? When Highland Park last held the Two-Man in 1986, one team at 65 made the 16-team championship flight. If 32 teams were taken then, two of seven 67s would have made it. The championship flight was expanded to 32 teams last year, which worked out well for Shulman and Mitchell. Other-Wise, they would have been in the first flight.

Should there be a tie for the 32nd spot, it will be broken by a scorecard playoff starting at the 18th hole and going back. I Joe Arbuckle By JIM BENSON Pantagraph staff It has been three years since Joe and Jeff Arbuckle took second place in the Bloomington-Normal Two-Man Best Position Golf Tournament. It has been three years since the brothers made the championship flight. It has been three years since Highland Park Golf Course held the tournament. "Thank God we're back home," sighed Jeff, a long-time Highland Park member.

The Arbuckles hope to regain some of the magic they mustered in 1986, when they were runners-up to Frank Niepagen and Brad Barker. Qualifying for the 16th Best Position begins today at Highland Park and continues Saturday before teams are flighted for, match play. Best Position fever has hit Bloomington-Normal golfers. As of last night, a record 185 teams had signed up. There are only seven openings left in the field.

See Scoreboard for tee times. Joe Arbuckle, who always hits second on the team, did not have to putt very often in 1986. He wouldn't mind the same thing happening again. made everything I looked at," said Jeff. I "There are so many good teams minnows and walleye are fair drift nightcrawlers in brushplles.

In the tailwater, white bass are fair on minnows and Jigs.

WELDON SPRINGS A lot of channel catfish are being caught near the concession stand us- -ing cheesebait. Also, two albino catfish were caught this week around -the bend from the concession stand. Some fishermen have caught a fair amount of bluegill and crappie. SPRING LAKE Largemouth bass have been good in the morning near the surface, hit- ting on spinnerbaits. Some have lm- proved their luck on boats in the ba- sin next to the weedbits.

MACKINAW RIVER Channel catfish and largemouth bass are being caught in good num- bers at night, using nightcrawlers and crawdads. CLINTON LAKE Striped bass are bitting below the dam, while walleye are being caught in the flats. Catfish are being taken on cheesebalts and should be helped by the hot weather. DAWSON LAKE Not much action to report, except for a few good-sized largemouth bass. EVERGREEN LAKE Fishing remains slow here, although a few smallmouth bass have been caught.

LAKE BLOOMINGTON John Wheat of Bloomington found the best time is the nighttime. Wheat caught a 14-pound channel catfish at 10 o'clock Wednesday night, using cheesebait. Some smallmouth bass are being caught to the side of the dam. LAKE SHELBYVILLE Crappie are hitting good at night with lanters on the fish points of the lower lake next to the river channel. Channel catfish are reported good on trout-iined baited leeches, while white bass is good late in the day using spinnerbaits.

Largemouth bass are fair using motor-oil colored plastic worms. White bass has been spotty in the tailwater early in the evening on Bloomington Legion tops i Corn Valley All-Stars, 14-2 until about three weeks ago," said 35-year-old Joe, who is three years older than Jeff. "We were averaging playing three days a week. I was averaging between 68 and 75 and Jeff was between 74 and 76." The Arbuckles shot a 6-under-par 64 in qualifying three years ago. They would gladly take the same number.

"I think the key in qualifying is birdieing Nos. 5, 6 or 7," said Joe of Highland Park's toughest stretch of holes. "If you do, you can pick up a shot on the rest of only hit one ball real hard." Decatur only hit three balls out of the infield. One of those was a triple by Rick Minton. "This was the biggest ball game of the year and I had all my spots," Plangger said.

"I forced Decatur to hit the ball on the ground and my defence played a super ball game." The Hearts' lone run came after Jim Collins walked in the second inning. He stole second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch by loser, Dave Scott, 22-6. Scott allowed three hits, struck Wild pitches propel Hearts past Pride, 1-0 Jeff Arbuckle the field, and maybe two." The Arbuckles purposely avoided qualifying today. They will tee off at 10:44 Saturday morning. "I like to get an idea of what I'm looking at (for the championship flight)," said Jeff.

'It does make a little bit of a difference." Of course, the Arbuckles are not the greatest judges of what it takes. They thought their 64 three years ago wouldn't make it. Then last year, they were 3-under-par at the turn and started pressing for two more birdies and ended up with two bogeys. So what happens if they fail to make the championship flight again? "We're going to get divorced," deadpanned Jeff. out seven and walked three.

-Steve King had two hits for the Hearts. "Both teams played super ball games and we were just lucky to be the team to score the only run," Kennedy said. "It seems like the first game we won when the other team made a mistake and we took advantage of it." Cedar Rapids is led by former Heart pitcher Al Rebling and Jody Henningar. The series winner automatically qualifies for the Aug. 11-20 ISC World Tournament at Kim-berly, Wis.

Decatur added two runs in the top' of the seventh and Blooming- ton-Normal pushed across one in the bottom of the seventh After several near misses, Elston Mitchell and Dave Shulman finally captured the title a year ago at the Illinois State University Golf Course. However, they won't get a chance to defend their crown. Shulman moved to Ohio last month, and Mitchell is now teaming with Rick Percy.

Mitchell is not the only top player with a new partner. J.B. Stevens and Bill Baird won the tourney two years ago. Baird moved to Arizona over the winter, and Rod Brent will be Stevens' partner. Some other new teams to watch include Mike McNeely and Drew Vance, John Kasch in this, someone has to have the hot putter," said Joe.

This is the Arbuckles' fifth time in the Best Position. They missed out in a playoff for the championship flight in 1985. They also were in the first flight in 1987 and slipped to the second flight last at a course they grew up on, the Arbuckles like their chances of regaining the championship flight. Steffi Graf, who was 5 years old when Evert won her first Wimbledon title in 1974, routed the three-time champion 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and set up a long-awaited rematch with Martina Navratilova.

Evert, 34, wilted under Graf's power and pressure on a day when temperatures on the court soared above 100 degrees.
