At times they seem to just go through the motions defensively. Sometimes they're' going to have to realize that defense can make the difference in a game. "There's no question that Jack (Sikma) is our big man. However, in no way does qur club consciously go to him offensively. I don't believe we're a team that can be beaten just by stopping him." Monday and the first CCIW game at Elmhurst Dec. 5. "We won't be overpowering in size right now but we should be later," said Bridges. Dave Pitelka of Riverside, 6-7 sophomore letterman who would nave shared duty with Douglas, broke a wrist last week and is out until at least the Quincy College tournament in late December. Two towering transfers become eligible in January.

John Lenahan, 6-8 sophomore from Central Catholic, becomes eligible Jan. 14 and Mike Rinker, 6-9 sophomore from Toluca, becomes eligible Jan. 22. Ixnahan transferred from Wisconsin and Rinker from Rollins. In addition to the size and depth factors, Bridges feels this team will have better outside shooting from the guards this season and that the experience gained by the talented freshmen of 1973-74 will pay off.

"We're still a young, sophomore-dominated team," he said. "I don't believe we have any obvious weakness, but I wish we ISU veterans Powell, Bubbles Hawkins, Rick Whitlow, Calvin Harper and Mike Bonczyk. The Redbirds open Saturday night at St. Louis University. (ISU Photo) Illinois State basketball coach Will Robinson is preparing for his fifth campaign at ISU with five players who saw starting duty last year.

From left are Roger Redbirds open cage season Saturday night at St. Louis Coach Dennis Bridges isn't sure that his current Illinois Wesleyan University basketball team will have a better starting team than some of its predecessors. But he is sure that it has more depth and size than any of the previous nine Titan teams he has coached. Bridges, whose team opens its season Friday with a home game against lakeland College of Sheboygan, xjints to two teams with starting lineups or even the first seven comparable to the present group. They arc the rj5-6G team that reached the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament quarterfinals and the l'J70-71 crew that zipped to a 16-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record before losing to ultimate champion Kentucky State in the NAIA meet.

"I've never had a group so talented from the eighth through the 14th spots, though, and we've never had so much height," Bridges said. "That kind of situation is great for practice, but it also has its problems. I'd make a big mistake to try to keep everyone happy by getting them a lot of playing time. They're going to have to be ready to contribute when they're needed and get their happiness from team success. "I've never felt before that when we got to Kansas City (for the NAIA tournament) that we had a chance to win it because we didn't have the big man.

But if we can get there this year and it won't be easy I feel we have a chance to go all the way." The starters against Lakeland are pretty well established. Jack Sikma, 6 foot 10 inch St. Anne sophomore who led the 12-12 team of last season in scoring and rebounding, will open at center. At the forwards will be 6-6 senior Ceasar Douglas of Chicago, the only non-letterman starter, and 6-3', 'z sophomore Bob Spear of Quincy, a returning regular. Captain Bruce Foote of Wheaton, a junior, will team with senior letterman Bill Molinari of Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West), who sparked in a reserve role late last season, at the guards.

Chris Eldredge, 6-4 freshman from Paris, will be the No. 1 reserve in the front line with sophomore Mike Bradley of Bloomington Central Catholic the No. 3 guard. Freshman forward Pete Wanzung of Elmhurst (York) and junior non-letterman guard Jeff Roth of Gridley will be other leading reserves as the Titans open a busy stretch that includes a game at Bradley Saturday, a home game against Bcmidji' (Minn.) Bloomfield will be first base coach and Saul will handle the bullpen. The Cubs named Marv Grissom as pitching coach during the World Series and have yet to name a third base coach.

None of last season's four coaches will return, including Hank Aguirre, J.C. Martin, Jim Spangler and Pete Reiser. Martin has become a baseball commentator for the Chicago White Sox. Reiser was reassigned as a minor league instructor at his own request. The contracts of Aguirre and Spangler were not renewed.

Pro hockey results NHL St. Louis 2, Toronto 2, tie ranking, because the schedule is very difficult." Most of the established major basketball powers play 16 or more of their 26 games at home. Not so the Redbirds, who have only 11 home games. Their December schedule shows three at home and five on the road. The home opener is an area televised game with Drake of the Missouri Valley on Saturday, Dec.

The Redbirds are not fielding a junior varsity team this season. Lettermen in addition to the four returning starters are Mike Bonczyk, 5-10 junior playmaker from South Holland (Dolton Thornridge) and Richard Jones, 6-3 junior wingman from York, Ala. (Livingston). Bonczyk was a starter while Powell was sidelined late last season. Other squad members include junior college transfer George Tometich, 6-2, Moline (Rock Island Alleman), and former junior varsity players John Crossen, 6-6, St.

"Individually, they are as good as anybody in the business. I expect both to" be offered an opportunity to play professional basketball after their college careers. Their 90 points in one game was the highest scored by two players at one time last season." Junior Roger Powell of Joliet (Central), who missed the final four games last season with a heel injury, is returning to the starting lineup. Powell is 6-5, Hawkins 64 and Whitlow 6-2. Carrying the rebounding load in ISU's double post offense will be 7-foot junior college transfer Jeff Wilkins of Chicago (Elgin), freshmen Cyrus Mann (6-10) of Detroit (Southeastern) and Billy Lewis (6-6) of Chicago (Farragut).

Their lack of college experience concerns Robinson in the early games, but their potential is so great that the Red-birds have been ranked as high as 18th in pre-season national polls. All three of them won Prep All-America honors. "It's a tough start for them," Robinson said. "The big question is how well they will react before hostile crowds. Rose's time of 29:22 for the six-mile course was seven seconds better than the next finisher, John Ngeno of Washington State, but slower than the 28:00.2 NCAA record set by Oregon's Steve Prefontaine in 1970. ing from a team that won 12 of its final 15 games and finished with a 17-9 record. But one of those starters, center Calvin Harper of Detroit (Pershing), was a regular on the football team and did not report for basketball until Monday "I doubt if he'll be in basketball condition until the first of the year," Robinson said. "He pushed his weight to 245 pounds for football, and he should be 20 pounds lighter for basketball." While younger players will have to carry the rebounding burden, the Red-birds have a thoroughly experienced backcourt. Senior Rick Whitlow of Michigan City, Ind. (Elston) and junior Bubbles Hawkins of Detroit (Pershing) return to form what could be the best backcourt combination in all of college basketball.

Hawkins scored a school record 58 points in one game last season, led the team in assists and has been named to several pre-season All-America squads. Whitlow led the team with a 21.8 average, scored 38 points against Missouri Valley Conference champion Louisville, and contributed 32 in the same game Hawkins had 58. "These two can play basketball," said Robinson, who has developed enough professional cage talent over the years to put his own pro team on the floor. OPEN THANKSGIVING DAY Oregon State rehires Andros CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Dee Andros has a job for at least another year. President Robert MacVicar of Oregon State University renewed Andros' contract as head football coach Monday night just 30 minutes after the school's Intercollegiate Athletic Board made the recommendation and gave Andros a vote of confidence. Andros' teams have been 2-9, 2-9 and 3-8 the past three seasons and it had been rumored he might be fired. In other business Monday night, the board instructed Dr.

Jack Davis, faculty athletic representative, to bring to the NCAA convention in January word of OSU's support for a return to single platoon football.
