C6 THE PANTAGRAPH, FRIDAY, NOV. 23, 1984 Archdiocese excused in seduction lawsuit Scouts7 cookies have safer boxes Lotto winner wants to buy Tom Selleck LANSING, Mich. (AP) There are two obvious things to do with $10.4 million, said Patricia Parker. The first? "Anything I want to." The second? "Buy Tom Selleck." Mrs. Parker, Kalamazoo, appeared at a news conference as the winner of Michigan's Lotto jackpot, the highest prize awarded in the game's 13 drawings so far.

Mrs. Parker also had some ideas about what not to tell reporters. She refused to tell her age, saying only that she is "too old" for the handsome television actor. She also refused to say where she works, where her husband works and whether they have children. She did say she and her husband will probably quit their jobs and may buy a new car.

Mrs. Parker received her first check of $417,257 after taxes. CHICAGO (AP) A year after their cookie sales were hampered by reports of tampering, Girl Scouts in northern Illinois and Indiana are launching their annual fund-raiser with boxes that are virtually tamper proof, scouting officials say. But, the new safety features, along with inflation, have added about 25 cents to the cost of the cookies, which will sell for $2.00 a box in most areas, said Clarine Hall, executive director of the Illinois Prairie Girl Scout Council, which covers portions of Cook and Lake counties. Cookie boxes will be sealed with "extra strong, high-heat glue," and will feature safety tear strips, Ms.

Hall said. "We tried to open those boxes, and you literally have to pull the whole top off," she told a news conference. "We're doing everything possible to ensure our product is safe," she said. Last year, cookie drives across the country 'were ruined when numerous people reported finding foreign objects, such as glass and pins, in the cookies. Some councils called off their cookie drives.

Although no one was seriously injured by the tampering, the incidents managed to scare off many potential customers, Ms. Hall said. The 15 councils in northern Illinois and Indiana would have lost about $750,000 if donations from companies and individuals hadn't replaced most of the lost revenue, she added. Revenue from the cookie drives provides about 40 percent of the income for the northern Illinois and Indiana councils, according to Ms. Hall.

On Sept. 26, the national executive director of the Girl Scouts of America, Frances Hesselbein, sent a letter to all councils saying that the FBI and other investigators "found no cases of tampering in the actual baking process," according to Ms. Hall. Investigators also found that the "nationwide conspiracy" theory was "equally unlikely," and determined that many of the tampering cases were hoaxes by children, she added "Many were crystallized sugar or shafts of wheat, instead of glass and pins," said Ms. Hall.

This year, if customers suspect a problem with the boxes, they should return the product to the area council, said Ruth Little, executive dirctor of the Rock River Valley Council in Rockford. Centrillio Council of Girl Scouts will start taking cookie orders in January. Allred'i agents had attempted to hand and mall the suit to one of the priests, Father Santiago Tamayo, through co-workers at his former church here. But attorneyi succeeded In getting a court order from Cole last July 5 Invalidating that attempt. The court indicated he would have to be served personally or through an authorized representative.

Tamayo has been out of the country since the suit was filed. Ms. Milla claimed that she was drawn into the sexual relationships in 1978, when she was 16 and a choir member and Sunday school teacher at St. Philomena Church In nearby Carson. She claimed that a priest at the church made sexual advances toward her while she was in a confessional, and then had sexual intercourse with her once or twice a month.

Two years later a second priest joined in the sexual encounters and between 1980 and 1982 five more priests had sex with her, the suit claims. LOS ANGELES The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles was excused last week as a defendant In a $15 million civil suit by a young woman who claimed that seven priests seduced her beginning in 1978 and that one fathered her 2-year-old daughter. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John L. Cole agreed with archdiocese attorney John McNicholas that Rita Mllla, now 22, waited too many years before suing the church for fraud and conspiracy. Cole's ruling places the case in limbo because there are now no active defendants.

The nine-month-old suit is still pending against the seven priests, but Ms. Milla's lawyers conceded that none of the priests has been formally served with copies of the court documents, so technically they are not defendants. 'The priests are in hiding," said attorney Gloria Allred, vowing to pursue them. WATERBED FACTORY Lowest Prices 828-7731 319 N. Main, Bl.
