THE PANTAGRAPH, Saturday, Dec. 27, 1986 B7 Harry Grieff Bernice Blunk Bernice E. Blunk, 76, of 503 N. Oak Normal, died at 11:58 a.m. yesterday (Dec.

26, 1986) at Brokaw Hospital after an illness of a few Also surviving are two daughters, Marilynn Briggs, Lansing, and Patricia Hildebrand, Baltimore, one sister; two brothers; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was a member of Park United Methodist Church. Mr. Fischer was a self-employed carpenter in the Baltimore area before his retirement. Irene Finks Irene Finks, 87, of Pekin, formerly of Bloomington, died at 10:45 p.m.

Thursday (Dec. 25, 1986) at Lake Manor Retirement Home, Pekin. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington, with the Rev.

Mark DeSutter officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Visitation will be for one hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home. She was born Nov. 30, 1899, in Bloomington, a daughter of Benjamin F.

and Mary Ennis Tatman. She married Frank A. Finks on Oct. 17, 1925, in Bloomington. He died May 14, 1967.

Surviving are one son, Joseph, Spring Valley, two sisters, Mary Conley, 1017 S. Mercer Bloomington, and Aurelia Malone, Barrington; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers. She was a Normal High School and Illinois State Normal University graduate. She taught in elementary schools in rural McLean County for several years.

Mrs. Finks and her husband owned and operated the Fiesta Motel and Restaurant, Pontiac, from 1946 to 1964. DEATHS Central Illinois Harvey Brandt MELVIN The funeral of Harvey C. Brandt, 69, Melvin, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, the Rev.

Rodney Blomquist officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery Ash Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Brandt died at 11:41 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 25, 1986) at Gibson Community Hospital. He was born Oct.

25, 1917, in Bloomington, a son of Jacob and Anna Walters Brandt. He married Edna Krumwiede on May 3, 1958, in Kankakee. She died April 16, 1969. Survivors include a brother, Earl, and a sister, Arlene Samet, both of Gibson City. A brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Brandt was a lifetime area resident. He was a retired farmer and construction worker. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and Kankakee Labor Local 751. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary C. Burger GRIDLEY Mary C. Burger, 88, of 1526 N. Linn Peoria, and a native of Gridley, died at 10:35 a.m. Thursday (Dec.

25, 1986) at her residence. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel, 2021 N. University Peoria, the Rev. Carl Bollinger officiating.

Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Peoria. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. She was born June 29, 1898, near Gridley, a daughter of Ellsworth and Mary Sword Benedict. She married Clarence W.

Burger Sept. 22, 1915, at Pontiac. He died March 2, 1953. Surviving are one son, William Peoria; one brother, Frank Gridley; one sister, Elsie Wahls, Gridley; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister.

She was a member of the Parkview United Church of Christ, Peoria. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Nancy Kamischke TOWANDA A memorial service for Nancy Kamischke, 45, of R.R. 1, Towanda, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the mausoleum at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev.

Fred Belcher officiating. She died Dec. 10, 1986. Beck Memorial Home was in charge of ar-, rangements. days.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Stub-blefield Funeral Home, Normal, the Rev. Larry Pitman and the Rev. Corson O'Brian officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery.

Vis itation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Blunk Sunday. She was born June 24, 1910, in Williamsville, the daughter of Walter and Daisy Stroud Lown. She married Raymond M.

Blunk on May 28, 1932, in Normal. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert, 207 Ambrose Way, Normal, and David, 1324 E. Vernon Normal; one brother, Harold Lown, Mendota; one sister, Thelma Giv-ens, Atlanta; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Blunk was a member of the University Christian Church, Normal, the McLean County Farm Bureau, the Lucille Sutton Guild and the Arrowhead Camping Club. She was reared in the Atlanta area and attended Atlanta schools. After graduating from Brown's Business College, she worked at W.H. Roland's.

She was employed for many years as a secretary for McKnight Publishing retiring in 1973. Memorials may be made to the University Christian Church. Ella Rotramel Ella E. Rotramel, 80, of 1509 N. Calhoun Bloomington, died at 10:35 p.m.

More deaths next page Sole surviving witness to fire listed serious CHICAGO (AP) The only surviving witness of a refinery fire that killed two people was in serious condition yesterday with burns, an improvement from the critical condition he had been listed in earlier, a spokeswoman said. The survivor, Bruce Guttke, 23, of suburban Tinley Park, and the two men who were killed were working in the Martin Oil Co.

tank yard in south suburban Alsip when a gasoline storage tank burst in a fiery explosion Tuesday. Guttke suffered burns over 15 to 20 percent of his body and had been listed in critical condition in the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, said nursing supervisor Pat Hartnett. His condition was upgraded to serious yesteiday, Ms. Hartnett said. Steven Szymakowski, 33, of Chicago Ridge, died Thursday at Cook County Hospital of burns suffered in the blaze.

His death followed that of Rudy Harrington, 52, of Joliet, who had been injured in the explosion. WildCountry "-r '-) 1 Arthur Knueppel BUCKLEY Arthur A. Knueppel, 75, a lifelong Buckley resident, died at 4:15 a.m. yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at Paxton Community Hospital, Paxton, after an illness of seven months.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran. Church, Buckley, with the Rev. Hugh McGhghy officiating.

Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Buckley. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ford-Baier Funeral Home, Buckley. He was born Sept.

22, 1911, in Buckley, the son of William and Mathilde Luhrsen Knueppel. He married Luella Ecker on Jan. 27, 1973, in St. John's Church, Buckley. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Rosemary Weber, Buckley, and Diane Younke, Spring City, two sisters, Eldred Laskowski, Vernon Hills, and Selma Leverette, Wheaton; six grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild. He was preceded in death by an infant sister and a brother. Mr. Knueppel attended St. John's Lutheran School, Buckley.

He was a farmer and also had been employed by Hoffman Silo Co. in Cis-sna Park, at the Buckley grain elevator and as custodian at St. John's Lutheran Church for nine years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Buckley Sportsman's Club.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church. Darrell Legel WASHINGTON Darrell G. Legel, 49, of 1005 Knollcrest died at 4:20 a.m. yesterday (Dec.

26, 1986) at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. He had been ill. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mason-White Funeral Home, Washington, with the Rev.

Deloris Henry officiating. He will be cremated. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. He was born May 14, 1937, in Washington, a son of Fred V.

and Helen P. Trowbridge Legel. He married Jacklin Henry on Feb. 22, 1959, in Washington. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David, Houston, Texas, and Douglas, Washington; two brothers, Ronald, Pekin, and Dennis, Chantil-ly, two sisters, Marlene Thomas, Boulder, and Sharon Killion, Marquette Heights; three grandchildren; and one step-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Legel was a machine repairman for Caterpillar Inc. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marion Dowling LINCOLN Marion C. Dowling, 88, Lincoln, died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 25, 1986) at Von-derlieth Living Center, Mount Pulaski. His funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lincoln, with the Rev. William Turner officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Holland Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln.

Mrs. Dowling was born July 30, 1898, in Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Andrew and Annie McArthur. She married Leslie W. Dowling on July 26, 1922, in Bloomington. He died April 22, 1963.

Survivors include two sons, Ward Lincoln, and William Malibu, and four grandchildren. Three brothers preceded her in death. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and its Daughters of the King and was a 50-year member of PEO, Chapter BM. Memorials may be made to the church or to Vonderlieth Living Center. Jess Hammer FARMER CITY Jess Willard Hammer, 71, of R.R.

1, Farmer City, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 25, 1986) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Stensel-Calvert-Belangee Funeral Home, Farmer City, the Rev.

Arthur Webb officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City, with graveside military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, with masonic services at 8:45 p.m. He was born May 31, 1915, in Crooksville, Ohio, a son of Charles R. and Anna Lightowler Hammer.

He married Zeo Shreve on Aug. 6, 1935, in Farmer City. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jim, Farmer City, and Bill, Parnell; one daughter, Bonnie Hammer, Champaign; three brothers, Rolland Hammer, Corning, Ohio; Samuel Hammer, Zanesville, Ohio; and Charles Hammer, San Leandro, two sisters, Olive Klein, South Zanesville, Ohio, and Mary Divers, New Haven, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

A retired farmer, Mr. Hammer was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Farmer City United Methodist Church, Farmer City Masonic Lodge 710 and Joe Williams Post 55 American Legion, Farmer City. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 6190 in Farmer City. He was a former member of the Farmer City volunteer fire department and the Piatt County Farm Bureau.

Memorials may be made to the organ fund of the United Methodist Church. Lloyd Polen LINCOLN Lloyd Polen, 53, of Lincoln died at 11:25 a.m. yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

He was taken to Pullen-Boos Funeral Home, Clinton. H. Earl Barringer PAXTON H. Earl Barringer, 76, of 112 W. Pine Paxton, died at 6:40 p.m.

yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at the Ford County Nursing Home, Paxton, where he had been a resident for six months. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Paxton, the Rev. Harold Bodeen officiating.

Burial will be in Glen Cemetery, Paxton. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ford-Baier Funeral Home, Paxton, and one hour before the service at the church Monday. He was born July 21, 1910, in Ramsey, a son of Corwin E. and Carrie Lewey Barringer.

He married Lela M. Coplea June 30, 1940, at Paxton. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Larry, Rantoul; one daughter, Donna Ulrich, Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren; four sisters, Viola Meuser, Rantoul; Hettie Mitchell, and Fern Shelton, Wayne City; and Bessie Mayer, Mount Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and one granddaughter.

He lived his early years in Southern Illinois and attended Southern Illinois schools. He was a farmer and construction worker from 1950 to 1983. He worked as a custodian at the United Methodist Church from 1983 to 1985. He moved from to Paxton from Rochelle in 1938. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Paxton, the Rantoul Moose Lodge and the labor union 703, Champaign.

He was active in square dancing. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. DWIGHT Harry Grieff, 84, of 223 Spencer Dwight, died at 3:15 p.m. yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at Grundy County Nursing Home, Morris.

He was taken to Von Qualen Funeral Home, Dwight. Bessie Culver WENONA Bessie M. Culver, 98, formerly of Wenona, died at 10:23 a.m. yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at Lida Home, Minonk, where she lived 12 years.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Thierry Funeral Home, Wenona, the Rev. Von Waggoner officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Rochelle.

Visitation will be an hour before the funeral Monday at the funeral home. She was born March 26, 1888, in Kings, a daughter of Robert and Harriet Hill Sipe. She married George C. Culver on Sept. 8, 1908, in Geneva.

He died in 1962. Surviving are a daughter, Lois Axline, Wenona; a son, George Freeport; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Mrs. Culver lived in Rochelle and Freeport for a number of years before moving to Wenona 25 years ago.

She had taught school and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Wenona. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Chester Salvati STREATOR Chester Salvati, 78, of 909 S. Park died at 7:55 a.m.

yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at St. Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Solon Funeral Home, with the Eagles ritual at 6:30 p.m. and the rosary recited at 7 p.m.

He was born Oct. 20, 1908, in Offena, Italy, a son of Dominic and Lucia Salvati. He married Alta Gray, who preceded him in death. He married Delia Thew on Oct. 19, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa.

She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Richard, Hawthorne, and Omar, Azusa, one daughter, Norma Risley, Streator; three brothers, Anthony and Leo, both of Streator, and Ernest, Ottawa; one sister, Gilda Salvati, Hot Springs, six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Mr. Salvati was employed for many years at Libbey Owens Ford in Ottawa before his retirement in 1970.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Moose Lodge, the Eagles Aerie 645, the Streator Elks, the Vermilion Boat Club and the Sandy Ford Sportsman Club. Bloomington-Normal Theodore Fischer Theodore C. Fischer, 84, of Baltimore, formerly of Bloomington, died at 12:02 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1986) at St.

Joseph Hospital, Powson, Md. His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Metzler-Froelich Memorial Home, Bloomington, the Rev. Gary L. Ford officiating.

Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be for one hour before the service Monday at the memorial home. He was born May 26, 1902, in Bloomington, a son of Henry and Bertha Roeske Fischer. He married Mildred E. Butler on March 13, 1937, in Baltimore, Md.

yesterday (Dec. 26, 1986) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Bloomington. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Beck Memorial Home, the Rev. David Peters officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the memorial home. He was born March 29, 1903, in rural Towanda, a son of Philip and Magdalena Geiger Sutter. He married Blanche Messer on Feb.

27, 1926, in Bloomington. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Dale, 305 S. Bone Normal, and Duane, R.R. 1, Towanda; and, seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. He was a former member of the Towanda Presbyterian Church. He was a leader of the Towanda Busy Doers 4-H Club. He served on the board of the Towanda Grain Co-op and was a director of the McLean County Soil Conservation District. He was a McLean County Farm Bureau member for many years.

Mr. Sutter was a grandson of John Sutter, an early settler in the Towanda area, who came from Baden, Germany, in the 1840s. Memorials may be made to the Home Sweet Home Mission or the Towanda Public Library. Hazel DeSort LINCOLN Hazel Todd DeSort, 89, Vista, formerly of Lincoln, died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 1986) at Lutheran Health Facility, Carlsbad, Calif.

Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Kerrigan Funeral Home, Lincoln, the Rev. Seldon Bernauer officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln. Visitation will be for one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. DeSort was born Dec. 5, 1897, in Jonesboro, a daughter of Miles and Elmira Quigley Sotzen. She married Rudolph DeSort on Sept. 15, 1918, in Lincoln.

He died Dec. 24, 1969. Survivors include a daughter, Julia A. Teichman, Vista, six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Lincoln.
