C6 THE PANTAGRAPH, Monday, Oct 18, 1993 DEATHS Chase 1 st casualty of late-night wars team of writers, consultants and Fox executives was brought in to revamp the program. Ms. Salhany said earlier this. month that Chase was "very ner-'j vous. It was uncomfortable and -embarrassing to watch it" The show, she added, was marred by unfunny writing Chase's lackluster interviews.

Frank N. Magid Associates, the i noted Marion, Iowa-based research and consulting firm, was hired to work with Chase. Promotional advertising efforts were halted un- jt LOS ANGELES CAP) Chevy Chase has reported the news many times: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead. Now "The Chevy Chase Show" is, too. Chase became the first casualty of the late-night television wars yesterday as Fox Broadcasting Co.

announced it was canceling his show, effective immediately. He began Chevy Chase Sept. 7 and battled David Letterman, Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall and Ted Koppel for viewers. But his show was savagely mauled by critics, and it performed a ratings pratfall much as Chase himself had done in his famous sendups of ex-President Ford. "Despite the commitment of Chevy and our best creative and production minds, we started slowly and did not perform to expectations," said Lucie Salhany, chairwoman of Fox Broadcasting.

"We saw nothing to indicate that the show would turn around." She thanked him "for giving us his best effort He is an extraordinarily talented man." In a statement released by Fox, Chase said: "I am proud of the comedic elements that we were able to intersperse throughout this otherwise very constraining format" He added that he was looking forward to the February release of his new film, "Cops and Robbers-ons." Less than a month after Chase's show appeared, an emergency til the show improved. One month after its debut the' show settled into fourth place, av r-eraging a 3.1 rating. One ratings 'i point equals 942,000 TV homes. No. 1 was Letterman's "Lately Show," which averaged a 5.9 rating for CBS, followed by ABC's "Night- line," moderated by Koppel, at 4.9''' and "The Tonight Show With Jay; Leno" on NBC at 3.9.

The syndi-cated "Arsenio Hall" was with a 2.1 rating. Fox had prom- I ised advertisers about a 4 rating. The decision to cancel the show was a well-kept secret Chase was told after Friday's show, Fox'; spokeswoman Betsy Hoffman but at midday yesterday an audi ence finder was still offering ets for the show's taping to Venice Beach crowds. On Sunset Boule-( vard, a sign on the Chevy Chase Theater still proclaimed "Holly wood Welcomes Chevy." Hoffman said Fox decided abandon the show before the vember sweeps period and that -finding a late-night replacement format and host to be decided be a priority. "We're committed to building late-night franchise," Hoffman said.

University St, Normal, I.UOISW Willi U11V1U U11UC1 U1C 111- fluence of alcohol. ii a-1' I High court's Ginsburg off and running WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -Judging by her energetic questioning from the bench, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is quickly hitting full stride in her new job. Intensive questioning last week by Ginsburg in a sexual-harassment case caused one lawyer to abandon his contention that the woman who had filed suit must prove the conduct harmed her performance at work. "She basically pushed him to concede the case," said Georgetown University law professor Susan Deller Ross.

During her first two weeks of high court arguments, Ginsburg has asked lawyers frequent and probing questions on other issues such as drug forfeitures and civil rights law. She also has brought the perspective of a former women's rights advocate to the conservative court, said some observers who noted that Ginsburg at one point described the "old days" of sexist law professors. 'Not awe struck' "She has hit the ground running," said Stuart M. Gerson, former acting attorney general in the Bush administration. "She has shown a great deal of energy and preparedness.

Being on the court is awe-inspiring, but she is not awe-struck." New justices often hold back when just arriving on the bench. Justice David H. Souter waited three weeks to ask his first question in 1990. Now a frequent and incisive questioner, Souter admits finding the job overwhelming at first Ginsburg's performance is being likened to the equally fast start in 1986 by Justice Antonin Scalia, her former federal appeals court colleague. "It's not just that she's asking lots of questions.

It's that she's asking outstanding questions that get to the heart of the matter," said Georgetown University law professor Susan Low Bloch. avanund, 20, of Merriam, posted $100 to appear Nov. 16 on charge of driving while license suspended. 4,. Alcohol Jeffrey S.
