C2 THE PANTAGRAPH, Tuesday, April 13, 1993 PETTALK WEDDINGS Healthy pets The Pantagraph today starts a new column for readers with pets from dogs and cats to ducks and Clydesdales. Pet Talk will run In the Families section each Tuesday. The column is produced by the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Sutter-Stevens overweight dogs are more prone to develop heart problems, diabetes, muscular and skeletal problems. Some dogs may be more prone than others to pick up extra pounds, such as neutered males and females, older animals that don't exercise as much, and certain breeds such as Labradors and spaniels.

She advises keeping a close eye on dogs in these categories, as well as closely monitoring pets in a household undergoing changes (parents switching from part-time to full-time work, children going off to college, possibly resulting in decreased exercise. Once you have committed yourself to helping your pet lose weight you must develop a plan to accomplish this. The first step is choosing the target weight Then, plan to lose no more than 15 percent of this target weight at one time. That is, don't put your pet on a crash diet When 15 percent of the target weight is lost, try to lose another 15 percent in a second stage, and so on. Using this weight loss technique, it may take six to 12 months to reach the animal's target weight, but that's fine, says Dr.

Hall. "While your dog or cat is stop all between-meal snacks: dog biscuits as well as human cookies," she suggests. Watch for children giving food to pets! Don't feed the overweight animal with other pets in the house and don't let it eat with you, either. Weigh out the pet's total daily intake and split it into two or three portions to be given throughout the day. While not absolutely buying a commercially pre- Pet weight loss program must be carefully planned Tried a million fad diets and nothing seems to work? Dr.

Susan Hall, a community practice veterinarian at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana, suggests a plan to take off excess weight in pets that works because it is sensible and scientific. "While it is easier to prevent obesity than to deal with it once it is present," says Dr. Hall, "it is possible to remove excess weight toy, choosing an 'ideal' weight for Spur dog or cat, weighing your pet regularly and choosing pet food parefully." What ideal weight you pick for your pet depends on its build, your fiersonal preference and your vet-ierlnarians's recommendations. Be sure to see your veterinarian before beginning a weight loss program for your pet, especially if lot of weight is to be lost Besides being the best guide to your pet's Jarget weight, he or she also can Tiile out any medical conditions ihat may look like or cause obesity. "Dogs gain weight much more frequently than cats.

Besides providing encouragement weighing at regular intervals ensures that your dog or cat is not losing weight too fast (or not at all). Use the same scale to weigh the pet each time to be more accurate. Moderate exercise is beneficial, but does not help animals lose weight like it does in people. The key to shedding extra pounds from your pet is by careful feeding.

Dr. Hall reminds owners that any extra energy you provide is stored as fat, and that just a few extra calories a day adds up to several extra pounds of fat a year. "Getting your pet to lose weight is hard," says Dr. Hall. "It's like putting your child on a diet" However, if you are committed to reducing your pet's weight and you truly believe that it needs to be done, weight loss in the dog and cat is very achievable.
