THE PANTACRAPH, FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1984 B3 Lueders wins 2 as ISU sweeps twinbill from Illinois-Chicago A By MYAN BlOODWORTH Pantograph staff It wasn't the reporters asking the questions at Illinois State University's Redbird Field yesterday. It was ISU baseball coach Duffy Bass. "When was the last time ISU had a pitcher win both games of a double-header," quizzed Bass after the Redbirds had rallied for a pair of 4-3 non-conference victories over Illinois-Chicago. "I sure cant remember it happening." Bass, who Is in his 21st year as head coach, was referring to senior relief pitcher Brad Lueders, who was the recipient of his third and fourth victories without a loss as the Redbirds raised their record to 16-3-1. Illinois-Chicago's record dipped to 5-8.

It took a one-out double by Todd Reeser in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Bryan House with the winning run in the first game. The second game ended just as dramatically as freshman Scott Huss earned a bases-loaded walk with one out in the eighth inning to drive in the winning run. ISU had forced a 3-3 deadlock in the sixth inning of the opening game when John LaRocco scored following a fielding error by Illinois-Chicago second baseman Carlos Chillon. That set the stage for Reeser's heroics in the seventh. With one out.

House singled and stole second before Reeser drove a Gary Renken fastball to the base of the right-center field fence to chase House home. "He got behind (on the count) and had to bring a fastball. It was right down the chute," said Reeser. "I finally swung the bat good for once. I had seen a few other good pitches from him that I didn't hit "I just wasnt being patient I hadn't hit the ball well my first three times at that one felt good.

I thought it was either going to drop or go out (of the park)." Lueders gave the Redbirds a chance to go into the bottom of the seventh tied when he came on In relief of Jay Darnell to strike out Renken after Frank Blasinski had doubled with two outs in the top of the inning. "When it got down to the nitty gritty, we brought In the old man (Lueders). He threw six pitches and got the win," said Bass. "He knows his role is to come in and throw strikes." The Redbirds had taken a 2-0 lead in the first Inning on a run-scoring single by LaRocco and a sacrifice fly by Reeser. Illinois-Chicago took its short lived 2 lead in the third on a three-run home run by Greg Ruzich.

Huss got his opportunity to be the hero in the second game as ISU battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the eighth. The Flames had taken the lead in top of the inning on Tony Masco's two-run single. The Redbirds' rally In the eighth took shape when House reached base on a fielder's choice and Mike Prior and Reeser singled to load the bases. A throwing error to first base by Ruzich on a routine grounder off the bat of Jim Pacanowski allowed House to score to cut the deficit to Paul Giersz followed with a suicide squeeze bunt single that brought Prior home with the tying run. Huss then coaxed his walk to score Reeser.

"The players hung in there in both games even though we really didn't hit worth a darn," added Bass. The Redbirds had 17 hits in the double-header with 10 coming in the second game. ISU had taken a 10 lead in the first as Greg Bee scored on the first of three Prior singles. Illinois-Chicago evened the score In the third on a Jim Ryan home run. ISU starting pitcher Ed Tomac was outstanding in seven innings of work In the nightcap despite not getting the victory.

He allowed just three hits and one run while striking out nine. Ray Gutoski, who followed Tomac to the mound, was roughed up for two straight singles before giving way to Lueders. Lueders gave up the single to Macso before getting David Vecchione to pop out to end the inning, setting che stage for the bottom of the eighth. CHATSWORTH ftp 1 That not one of our better garnet but you have to give ChiUworth credit That'i the first time we've faced a man-to-man (defense) the whole game," said Teutopolis coach Dennis Koester. "Our guards didnt run the of-' fense like they can but maybe that was part Chatsworth's doing.

We have two big players and the rest are role players." Carle and Deters, who average 165 and 18 8 points, respectively, each had IS while being closely guarded by Weber and Lynn Haberkorn. Westendorf's totals were more than four points and three rebounds above her season averages. "Her role is garbage around the basket and she plays defense," Koester said. "Sometimes I think we play with two basketball players and three track stars. (Guard Jane) Schumacher won the Class A run last year and Westendorf won the 200.

(Guard Michele) Wendt is quick too but wont go out for track even 'though the coach keeps after her to." Only two Chatsworth players scored in double figures as Weber had 15 and Lynn Haberkorn 13. Teutopolis' tight 2-3 matchup zone helped limit 5-11 forward Beth Gillette to five points, nine below her average. "They weren't getting the ball inside like they normally do. They had to move out a little bit and we were able to get the boards," said Koester, whose team held a 35-21 rebounding edge, including team rebounds. Teutopolis, which made 52 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, settled for 46.7 percent shooting (21 of 45).

Chatsworth finished at 38.6 percent (17 of 44) and had 16 turnovers compared to 18 for Teutopolis. 7 Delta State trims IWU twice Teutopolis' Doris Carie looked for someone to pass to while beind defended by Chatsworth's Lynn Haberkorn during their State Class A Girls Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game at Champaign yesterday. Bushnell-Prairie City, McGrew stop Atkinson CHAMPAIGN Ellen McGrew's stunning 20-point second-half rally yesterday lifted Bushnell-Prairie City to a 38-34 victory over Atkinson in the Class A Girls Illinois High School Basketball Tournament. McGrew, who finished the game with 28 points, scored all but five of the Lady Spartans' points in the second half as Bushnell snapped back from a six-point halftime deficit. The victory gave Bushnell a 28-1 record and set up a semifinal match with Quincy Notre Dame today.

the second inning. One came on a passed ball and the other during a double play. A ground ball by Stewart scored Brave in the third inning. Brave had reached base on an error. Trailing, 11-3, IWU erupted for four runs in the sixth.

Steve Leim-beck opened with a walk. Steve Bridges reached base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Mark Going followed with a single before classmate Jon Dempsey walked. Brave drove in a pair of runs with a double before freshman Dan Hering walked to load the bases. Winterland's single then pushed in two runs.

Thorpe and the same thing happened. I made three passes at it before I hit it," Mahaffey said. Mahaffey, a winner in the Bob Hope Classic earlier this season, had a 69 that left him a single shot off the lead in this, the annual championship of golf's touring pros. "With the exception of one swing, that's the best I've played," Mahaffey said. The one swing that marred his performance, however, was a costly one.

It was from the tee on the 132-yard 17th hole, the little par-3 that has an island as its green. Mahaffey hit his tee shot in the water there. Soft. Supportive. Lightweight.

It was a see-saw battle until Wancket reeled off six consecutive points early in the second quarter. The six-point Atkinson lead stood up until 5:58 of the third quarter when McGrew hit a 15-foot jumper. Just before the period ended, she tied the score, and early in the fourth quarter put Bushnell ahead to stay.

She scored her 20 second-half points in a little over 12 minutes, while Atkinson had trouble shooting and handling the ball. Ptnlagrtpft pholoAL PODGORSKI OC. LEGG TEUTOPOLIS From Bl "They played a real good matchup zone," she said. "It seemed like every time I turned around there was someone there. They also got out to the corners well and that's where I like to shoot from." Lynn Haberkorn spent much of the day guarding Deters, and came away impressed with the Teutopolis senior.

"She's really mobile," Haberkorn said. "She gets the ball, turns, and squares herself up with the basket real well. They're a good team all around, but basically they like using their inside game. They were definitely big. It's usually easier for us to get the ball inside than it was today." Weber was assigned the task of staying with Carie, Teutopolis' leading scorer with an 18-point average, and ran into countless roadblocks while limiting Carie to 15 points.

"They were setting really good screens for her and that made it difficult to stay on her," Weber said. "I would just get through one screen and there would be another And she can also play both inside and outside and that makes it tough." The loss marked the third year in a row Chatsworth has lost in the quarterfinal round. Last year the Bluebirds fell to Central Catholic, 47-45, on a last-second shot by Central's Debbie Kniery. Junior Judy Haberkorn, a starting guard and cousin of Lynn Haberkorn, felt this year's defeat was a bit easier to swallow. "I think it's a little easier because last year Central Catholic had already beaten us once earlier in the season," she said.

"Because of that, the game with them here was sort of a revenge game." Weber and Gillette didn't quite agree. This was my last game ever, so it's not any easier for me to take," said Gillette, the team's senior captain. "Last year it was only two points so we knew were close," Weber said. "But this year we kind of got blown out and that's harder for me to accept" Murray double sparked the surge. A home run by Jim Stewart following a Steve King single gave IWU a 6-4 lead.

Delta State answered with five runs in its half of the inning. The Titans scored two runs in the sixth thanks to Tom Rogan's double after Barry Brave had walked and King had singled. Freshman pitcher Brett Robinson took the pitching loss in his first decision after giving up six hits and eight walks. In the second game, Delta State had five players steal bases en route to the victory. The Titans scored two runs in match for gusts.

And they were tricky, shifting winds. But the conditions were mild compared with the gale-force blasts that rocked and buffeted the morning players. Morning winds were clocked in excess of 45 mph and actually knocked players off balance as they attempted to make a swing. "I've been out here (on the PGA Tour) for 14 years and I can't recall playing in conditions quite that windy," said former PGA champion John Mahaffey, who worked in the worst of the weather. "On the 18th, in the fairway, the wind knocked me off balance on my backswing and I had to back away from it.

I stepped up again, playoffs and rookie Jon Sundvold hit 12 to narrow Utah's halftime lead to 64-52. The Sonics, outscoring Utah 12-6 at the outset of the third quarter, cut Utah's lead to 68-62 on a layup by Sikma at the 8:58 mark. The Jazz, despite shooting 32 percent in the period, regained an 11-point advantage at halftime as Dantley hit two free throws to put Utah up 86-75. Utah advanced the lead to 17 points on a layin by Jerry Eaves with about 10 minutes left. Then the Jazz went cold and the Sonics outscored them 13-6 and moved to within eight points with 4:29 left on a jump shot by Sikma.

Utah, which was 30-52 last season, upped its season record to 42-33.

Seattle, still in the chase for one of the eight Western Conference playoff spots, got 28 points from Tom Chambers and 22 from center Jack Sikma. The loss left the Sonics at 37-38 in the Pacific Division.
