jtn f)f Paily antagraph MONDAY, MAY 28, 1984 A8 SYLVIA PORTER 4-H'ers make dent in farm safety Sophisticated women neglect estate planning 1 At 'l 4Me '1 ning, a rescuer's glance at the sticker could save a life. The Willing Workers first got the idea to stress farm machinery shut-off safety from an article In the McLean County Farm Bureau newspaper, according to 15-year-old club president Jackie Killian. Then it was a matter of securing the stickers. At 20 cents each, the club realized it would need some financial help in purchasing the stickers. Six Lexington businesses supported the project Kemp Grain 4 Hardware Myers McLean County Service Paymaster Seeds, the Lexington Fire Department and the Home Extension unit.

About 700 stickers have been distributed to the first four businesses. Any leftover decals will be displayed by the fire department during Lexington homecoming activities in mid-June. Now that the Willing Workers have taken the first step toward farm machinery shut-off safety awareness in the county, their seemingly small effort may blossom into a much larger front. It's Mrs. Killian's hope that the PantaoraDh photo Money Creek Willing Workers have placed farm safety decals at Kemp Grain Hardware Co.

in Lexington for farmers to pick up and put on their machinery. 4-H club president Jackie Killian, left, leader Helen Leake and member Kelli Killian presented the stickers to Kemp manager Bill Killian. At a small gathering of intelligent and informed women recently, the subject of planning estates came up. Casually, I asked whether their wills were up to date. To my astonishment, only one of the women had ever made a will.

Among that superior group, the indifference to the implications of being without a will left me speechless. Even after I had sputtered warnings, I had a feeling most didn't care. You must care. Every woman should have her own will, whatever her assets, marital status and-dependents. Despite your sophistication in many areas of finance, you remain careless about this vital protection.

In many families, only the husband has a will, or the wife permits her husband's lawyer to prepare a carbon copy of his will without any personal consultation. Few women take the initiative to consult a lawyer. If you consider the costs to your heirs of not having a will, you will realize how significant this failure can be. The additional court and lawyers' fees and time wasted add up dwarfing the few minutes and dollars involved in making a will. Also, state law governs the distribution of property in the absence of a will and it is rare for a state to provide for your property to go to the people you wish.

If you are married, you should discuss your will with your husband and he should discuss his with you. You should go together to your family lawyer to prepare your wills. If your husband consults a lawyer about a will, you should be there. By CHRIS HEISER Pontagroph farm editor LEXINGTON Their powers of influence are limited. They know they can only make a dent in increasing farm safety awareness.

But if they save one life, it will all have been worthwhile. That's the mission of nine young women, members of the Money Creek Willing Workers 4-H Club. Under the leadership of Sandy Killian and Helen Leake, the 4-H'ers decided to push farm safety as a club project this year. Specifically, they've obtained four types of orange flourescent stickers from the University of Maryland for distribution to area farmers. The stickers, to be mounted near onoff switches on farm machinery, show equipment operators how to shut off the engine.

That knowledge becomes particularly useful to persons who only operate machinery on a limited basis and often aren't familiar with new equipment. And should someone happen upon an accident in which a farmer is pinned by a machine with the engine still run FARM NEWS Americans eat more meat and animal fats, sugar and fruit than Russians. But Soviet citizens consume more fish, dairy products, vegetables and grains. Per capita egg consumption is about the same in both countries, but the Russians consume three times as many potatoes which they regard as "the second bread." A breakdown shows meat and fat consumption at 125.6 pounds per capita in the U.S.S.R. That year, per capita consumption of beef, alone, was 104.4 pounds in the United States.

Add 2 pounds of veal, 1.7 pounds of lamb and mutton, 62.7 pounds of pork, 1.5 pounds of lard, and 53.2 pounds of poultry and you find Americans consuming 100 pounds mora meats per capita than Russians. Americans also consume a lot more sugar and vegetable oil. Sugar consumption in the U.S. is at 135 pounds and 100.3 pounds in Russia; vegetable oil, 49.3 pounds in the United States, and 29.1 pounds in Russia. On the other hand, while fish consumption has gone up in recent years in the United States, per capita consumption is only 16.4 pounds per person.

This, compared to 40.5 pounds per person in Russia. Consumption of milk and milk products, including butter, runs about 302 pounds per person in the United States, but more than double that 650 pounds in Russia. Cards showing ear notches are needed by the Logan County Extension office for 4-H'ers who will Always go to a lawyer to prepare a will. The odds against your properly preparing one yourself are astronomical and the costs of litigation if you make a mistake will be many times greater than the fee a lawyer will charge. If you have any doubts, ask the lawyer in advance what the fee will be.

Another point that came up at that gathering was how to handle your cash and here, I want to emphasize that there is no more important principle of financial management than having a certain amount of money under your personal control. At the very least, this means maintaining one bank account that is yours alone: a checking account from which you pay your personal bills; a savings account that you use only for emergency purposes, or perhaps a money market fund. If your financial position justifies maintaining a separate securities account, this also is desirable. Many families, though, find that a joint bank account is the most satisfactory way to maintain their family cash. If all your cash is in joint ownership, complications can arise on the death of your spouse.

As an alternative, you might consider establishing separate accounts, with each giving the other spouse power of attorney. This gives both of you the power to withdraw funds from both accounts, so that you have the equivalent of joint accounts for most purposes, but you do not have joint ownership. Each bank maintains its own forms of powers of attorney for this purpose. You've merely begun to plan if you follow this advice. Check out a good lawyer, and spend the few dollars to get hisher help.

SEATTLE (AP) The beleaguered Washington Public Power Supply System has adopted a new logo that officials hope will make people forget the "Whoops" nickname that has dogged the utility for years.

The old logo was made up of the letters "WPPSS" stacked totem-like in front of orbit rings representing an atom. Since the late 1970s, "Whoops" has been idely used in discussions of the often ill-fated WPPSS nuclear power plant construction program. WPPSS last year defaulted on a $2.25 billion bond debt for two terminated nuclear plants in the largest bond default in the nation's history and faces a host of lawsuits. The "WPPSS" logo was scrapped in 1981, and the supply system has Business briefs Ra-Jac gets Blatz LA.
