Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1994 The Pantagraph People slaying star Friend acquitted in of 'Hogan's Heroes 'Stargate' cruises to No. 1 LOS ANGELES (AP) "Star-; gate" took in a projected $16.8 million at the weekend box office, three times its nearest competitor, industry sources said. Kurt Russell and James Spader star in the science fiction filnv about a time portal to another axy, which debuted this weekend. The critically acclaimed "Pulp Fiction" was in second place with a take of $5.5 million.

The preliminary industry esti- mates for ticket sales from Friday through Sunday are: 1. "Stargate," $16.8 million. 2. "Pulp Fiction," $5.5 million. 1 3.

"The Specialist," $4 million. 4. "Love Affair," $3.6 million. 5. and 6.

(tie) "The Road to Wellville," "The River Wild," $2.7 million. 7. "Little Giants," $2.3 million. 8. "Wes Craven's New Night- mare," $2 million.

9. "Forrest Gump," $1.85 million 10. "The Shawshank Redemption," $1.55 million. Running times for local movies again after 16 years," Carpenter said, sobbing and smiling at the same time as he spoke to reporters. Crane played the wisecracking Col.

Robert Hogan in the television comedy about a Nazi POW camp, which ran from 1965 to 1971. He was 49 when he was found dead on June 29, 1978. His body was lying in a blood soaked-bed in an apartment he rented while performing in a dinner theater production in Scot-tsdale, a Phoenix suburb. Crane's skull was crushed prosecutors contend with a camera tripod, though one was never found and an electrical cord was found around his neck. Carpenter had been out with Crane and a woman the night before and left town the morning of the day the body was discovered.

Charges weren't brought until 1992, after a new prosecutor took office and decided to take another look at unsolved murders in the county. "There wasn't any proof," said the jury foreman, Marine Sgt Michael Lake. Lake belittled a central piece of physical evidence, a photograph of a speck found on the door of Carpenter's rented car. Prosecutors said it was tissue from inside Crane's head. But the material has been lost and was presented only as a photo.

"What was the speck?" Lake said. "Nobody knows what it was, not even the doctors." Prosecutors also pointed to stains of Type blood, Crane's type, found in a car Carpenter rented. But there was little other hard evidence against Carpenter during the eight-week trial. "They may have bungled the case so badly they'll never find the killer," defense attorney Stephen Avilla said after the verdict to do TV shows the companies weren't announced. Michael Ovitz and his firm Creative Artists Agency will help the media company buy programming from networks and develop new programming with studios, artists and producers.

To deliver the programming, the companies are seeking Federal Communications Commission approval to build "video dialtone systems," which are high-quality telephone networks able to carry video services. Book signing Saturday Susan E. Kirby will sign the first two books in her "Main Street Route 66" series from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Babbitt's Books, 104 North Normal. The books are "Lemonade Days" and "Home for Christmas," both published by Avon Books.

We'll be out of town, thank you BANGOR, Maine What kind of hollow weenie is Stephen King? The horror writer and his wife, Tabitha, placed an advertisement in Saturday's Bangor Daily News notifying residents not to include their Victorian mansion on Halloween rounds. "We're sorry, but the Kings will not be giving out trick-or-treat candy this year, but wish you all a happy and safe Halloween," the ad said. In the past, King decorated the forbidding mansion in ghoulish fashion and sat in the tower to the delight of fans. But things quickly got out of hand, and King and his family have taken to leaving town to avoid the crush of trick-or-treaters. For those who didn't see the advertisement, a locked gate and security guards will keep the empty-handed Halloween celebrants from getting too persistent She's just a Southern Baptist girl RADNOR, Pa.

Shannen Doherty says she's not the boyfriend-beating, photographer-chasing, hard-partying Hollywood vixen the American public has come to know. "How can I be? I'm just a nice, Southern Baptist Republican girl," Doherty says in an interview with syndicated columnist Liz Smith in the Nov. 5 issue of TV Guide. The 23-year-old "Beverly Hills, 90210" alumna says she wouldn't have been criticized so heavily if she were a man. "I'm a woman, and I'm strong and (the media) said, 'Great, we have a new bitch.

So let's go after she says. "Certainly nothing I ever did warranted their taking it to the extreme they did." Doherty says she's become empowered as an individual, and that also led her to end a five-month marriage to actor Ashley Hamilton. "It was time for me to start taking control of my life. Stop being a victim of men and the press," she says. Movie gives him new lease on life LOS ANGELES John Travolta, his movie career revived by the hit film "Pulp Fiction," is paying $25,000 per month to lease a home in Beverly Hills.

Travolta has two new films in the works, and has leased the $4 million Tudor-style home for nine months, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. In "Pulp Fiction," a dark comedy directed by Quentin Tar-antino, Travolta plays a heroin-addicted hit man. His new films are "White Man's Burden," being produced by Tarantino's film company, and "Get Short," in which he will play a loan shark. Travolta owns homes in Carmel, and in Maine. The 7,500 square-foot Beverly Hills home has four bedrooms, seven baths, an office and maid's quarters.

Jurors deliberated nearly 2V4 days before finding John Henry Carpenter, 66, of the Los Angeles suburb of Carson, Bob Crane innocent of first degree-murder in the bludgeoning death.
