B2 THE PANTAGRAPH, Wednesday. July 16, 1986 GOLF From B1 ond shot at the 17th three feet away for a birdie to draw even. The Hundmans, who fired a 60 during qualifying, had seven birdies for a 63 yesterday. They had one foot pointed toward the No. 1 tee and sudden death as Thompson and Concklin were lining up an 8-foot birdie attempt at the 18th.

Thompson left his short and Concklin, who prolonged the match with a 6-foot birdie putt at No. 17, stayed left of the hole. "I was ready for it," said Dave Hundman of a playoff. "I thought they would make it." Concklin thought the turning point was Nos. 13 and 14.

The Hundmans birdied both to go 2-up. "They were too long for us," said Concklin. "The pins were up front and they were hitting an iron (second shot) to the 13th green (a par-5)." Warmbir and Cherry, Highland Park regulars, used their knowledge of the course to full advantage. Warmbir knocked in birdie putts of 12 feet at the 8th and a pair of 35-footers at Nos. 10 and 11 to take a 3-up advantage.

They struggled from Nos. 12-16, but lost only one hole. Warmbir put on the finishing touches with a 10-foot birdie at the 17th to end 6-under. "I can read them," said Warmbir of the greens. Most teams ALL-STARS From B1 said.

"The toughest thing is throwing over Dave Parker. He didn't want to slide, and I didn't want to hit him." Clemens, working in his first All-Star Game on just three days' rest, was untouchable, throwing 21 strikes in 25 pitches. While he struck out only two, he retired nine straight, the first pitcher since 1980 to throw three perfect innings. "I felt sluggish all day yesterday," said Clemens, who is from the Houston area. 'Today, coming out to the 'Dome, I got all the adrenalin flowing.

Coming home and pitching like this in the All-Star Game with my family here is like a dream come true." the Astros' Mike Scott for his home run. The ball just barely cleared the wall in left-center. Wade Boggs of Boston hit what would have been a home run at Fenway Park with a runner on the first inning, and in the second Whitaker tagged Gooden for real. With Rickey Henderson of the New York Yankees on second and one out in the first inning, Boggs hit a high fly ball deep into the left-field corner. Tony Gwynn of San Diego caught the ball for an out, more than 320 feet from home plate.

There were two out in the second when Winfield doubled to the wall in right field. The ball hit the wall on a sort hop, and Winfield cruised into second easily with the first extra-base hit off Gooden. After Clemens, Ted. Higuera of Milwaukee worked three one-hit innings, followed by Hough, in his first All-Star game at age 38, and Righetti, who finished the eighth but couldn't make it through the ninth. Gooden gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, Kirby Puckett of Minnesota, but got out of that inning.

Then, with two out in the second inning, Dave Winfield of New York doubled and Whitaker followed with the towering home run to right field. "That's been the problem all year," Gooden said. "One mistake pitch and I get hurt I hope I can work on eliminating that in the second half of the season." White, pinch-hitting for Whitaker with two out in the sev-. enth, hit a two-strike pitch from Warmbir likes to step up first because "when I pick up the right line, I'm ready to putt." Joe Arbuckle said younger brother Jeff is making all the putts for their team. Jeff Arbuckle said he's using a new putter, which he received as a gift from a friend, for the first time.

"I have a good feel with it and it feels good in my hands," said Jeff Arbuckle. "The kid's knocking them in from everywhere," said brother Joe. Jeff Arbuckle hit an 8-iron within 11 feet at the 135-yard 12th and drilled the putt for a 2-up advantage that went to 3-up the next hole. The Arbuckles were 7-under for 15 holes. 200 pounds Ramdan Siblev, Soviet Union, stopped Ike Padilla, United States, 1:57, 1st.
