C8 THE PARAGRAPH, SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 1983 CENTRAL ILLINOIS EDITION NBA DRAFT Houston to dictate action perimeter, Sidney Lowe of N.C. State (66, 195), who handles the ball very well and who showed his leadership in taking his team to the NCAA title; John Paxson of Notre Dame (6-2, 185), who is a solid athlete, good ball handler and passer, and Rod Foster of UCLA (6-2, 160), an exceptionally quick athlete and an excellent outside shooter. The outstanding forwards are Carr of Wichita State (6-9, 220), a power forward who can leap and take the ball to the basket, and is also a great inside player on offense who can be an intimidator on defense; McCray (6-7, 220), an aggressive, strong athlete who is also quick for his size and a good all-around player; Sidney Green (6-9, 220) of Nevada-Las Vegas, a finesse player who can shoot from the outside, and Ellis of Tennessee (6-7, 205). Among those who double as guards and forwards, there is, for one, Drexler. There is also Leo Rautins of Syracuse (66, a standout passer and ballhandler.

Los Angeles Times inside player; Greg Kite of Brigham Young (6-11, 250) a good low-post man who is agile and can score inside, and Mark West (6-10, 230) of Old Dominion, a strong defensive player and shotblocker. Of the guards, Blake considers Scott the best prospect Scott (6-4 Vi, 195) is a good shooter with good range who averaged 21.6 points at ASU. Darrell Walker of Arkansas (64, 180) is probably the best defensive guard. He's another pure talent, a Sidney Moncrief type who has been described as being "in that skywalking family." Among the top guard candidates are Jeff Malone (64W, 187) of Mississippi State, who led the Southeastern Conference in scoring, averaging 26.8; Randy Wittman (66, 205) of Indiana; Howard Carter of LSU (6-5, 215) who averaged 17.6 points a game and who could also play forward; Jon Sundvold of Missouri (6-2, 170) a smart, controlled player and a good outside shooter; Stewart Granger of Villanova (6-3, 190) who runs the court well, penetrates well and can shoot from the If none of the rumored trades for that No. 3 pick go through, Houston is expected to select forward Rodney McCray of Louisville.

The Rockets, who earned rights to Sampson by finishing 14-68 last season, need players. So they were listening to offers from teams that would like to give them a player and a lower first-round pick in exchange for that No. 3 pick. Unlike the last two NBA drafts, superstar underclassmen will not steal the show this time. In 1981, it was Mark Aguirre, Isiah Thomas and Buck Williams who were the first three picks, and in 1982, it was James Worthy, Terry Cummings and Dominique Wilkins.

Of the six undergraduates in this NBA draft, maybe four will be go in the first round, none in the top three. Four of the six are guards Ennis Whatley of Alabama, Glenn "Doc" Rivers of Marquette, Byron Scott of Arizona State and Derek Harper of Illinois. Although that influx of young guards is not likely to shake up the NBA, the loss of-that group could adversely affect the 1984 Olympic team. The other two rushing their NBA careers are 6-10 center Russell Cross of Purdue and Drexler, the 66 forward (maybe guard) from Houston. Cross is expected to be the first center taken after Stipanovich.

Cross (6-10, 245) is a good shooter, averaging 17.7 points for the Boilermakers. He, too, could be a power forward. Next among the centers are Randy Breuer of Minnesota (7-3, 231), a good offensive player who is fundamentally sound; Roy Hinson of Rutgers (6-9, 220), an intimidating That makes Houston the focus of the draft even after the No. 1 pick. Houston also holds the No.

3 pick. As NBA scout Marty Blake said Friday, "The key to the draft is Houston. With their third pick, Houston will dictate the draft through pick 10. Everybody wants a big guy." But while Houston is the key, nobody is sure what it will do. Not even Houston.

General Manager Ray Patterson is not saying much. "We're interested in three guys with the No. 3 pick," Patterson said Friday. "We like Antoine Carr, Dale Ellis and Rodney McCray, not necessarily in that order. We would be very satisfied with any of those three guys, so we might just as well leave our options open and listen to what everyone has to say to us." 1 pick. And, as usual, the No. 1 pick is a foregone conclusion. Virginia center Ralph Sampson to Houston. That was decided a month ago when Houston won a coin flip with Indiana.

After that and after, in all likelihood, Indiana picks center Steve Stipanovich of Missouri the sound you hear will be that of magnetic markers screeching up and down metal boards as coaches, general managers and personnel directors play musical talent on their draft charts. The draft will be held at the Felt Forum in New York City's Madison Square Garden. And, as usual, the last few days and even the last few hours before the draft will be filled with intrigue, trades and trade SPORTS FESTIVAL Wyland posts highest score in diving COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Wendy Wyland rallied from a poor start to post the highest score ever by an American woman in IOmeter platform diving and successfully defend her championship at the National Sports Festival yesterday. On the first full day of competition in the annual gathering of America's top young amateur athletes, the semifinals in boxing were marked by upsets, as three defending champions were beaten, while national Golden Gloves champ Jesse Benevides and world lightweight champ Pernell Whitaker won.

Wyland, an 18-year-old from Mission Viejo, qualified for the U.S. team in the Pan American Games by scoring heavily on four of her last five dives to roll up a 459.66 total, three points better than her old U.S. mark. Her Mission Viejo teammate, Megan Neyer, was second at 410.46, and also earned a Pan Am berth. Diving is one of five sports using the festival to choose Pan Am squads.

Yesterday at the Air Force Academy pool, she fell behind in the early mandatory-dive rounds as Kim Engel, of Miami, forged into the lead, largely on the strength of her second dive, when she received three perfect scores of 10 and several 9s. Wyland had just one 10 all day, on her third dive, but exploded in the late going with her optional routine. In the boxing semifinals, Al Evans of Chicago stopped defending super-heavyweight champ Craig Payne of Livonia, at 44 seconds of the first round. A right hand dropped Payne for the three- .1 ii I li a si a V. luuui, a flu i lie: i cici iiicil stopped the bout.

Benevides, defending champ at 119 pounds from Corpus Christi, Texas, scored a split decision over Lupe Gutierrez, from Turlock, Calif. And Whitaker, another de- fender at 132, won a unanimous decision over Robert Byrd, of Dal-; las. At the Broadmoor Ice Arena, David Fedor of Tonawanda, N.Y., took the lead in men's figure skating after the short program.

In women's figures, the lead was held by Kelly Webster, the hometown favorite from Colorado Springs. And in women's Softball, lefthander Michelle Thomas of Phoenix hurled a no-hitter to pace the South to a 2-0 over the North.
