THE PANTAGRAPH, Thursday, Nov. 27, 1986 C3 Ask-A-Nurse service gives health answers Alcohol affects women differently By Scripps Howard Women respond to alcohol differently than men and their reasons for abusing alcohol as well as their desire for treatment may differ too, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Although women generally begin alcohol abuse at a later age than men, male and female alcoholics seek treatment at about the same age, the report said, suggesting that the disease may develop more quickly in women. spite of the fact that -that's unknown, people have benefited from this kind of program In that they've been able to lose weight." But Heim insisted, "The question that needs to be asked is: What's the long-term effect? "It will not be any different than any other quick-loss diet. It doesn't address the basic problem and that is many people need a total reorientation of the way they eat.

It's got to be something lifelong." Katahn, who has appeared on television talk shows, made dieting videos and plans to publish a collection of recipes, responded: "We invented penicillin and nobody knew how it worked but they knew it worked. I intend to make sure the research is done." ROTATORS From C2 Health Promotion Center at Van-derbilt, said he is not a fan of any quick-loss diet, though he thinks Katahn has helped promote general good health through low-fat, high-fiber meals and stepped-up physical activity. Still, Heim said, "Nobody can follow the rotation diet the rest of their lives." Besides, the diet is unproven, he said. "He does not measure metabolic rate in any sophisticated way. It's based on an anecdotal experience and I don't think he has proved his major contention." Vanderbilt researchers hope to win a grant to study the diet's effect on metabolism.

Heim continued: "There's been no follow-up in Nashville. After the big thing with the Kroger stores I kept waiting for somebody to come back and say, 'Well, what about The researchers, headed by David Schlundt, are trying to trace about 19,000 of the more than 75,000 people in Nashville who Katahn estimates participated in the Nashville melt-a-million campaign. "We really don't know how long these people are going to be able to keep the weight off," Schlundt said. The nurses are trained to encourage callers to clearly describe their situations, and they extract symptomatic information as well as pertinent medical history. Use of a "protocol manual" enables the nurse to assess the situation as an emergency, a next-day doctor visit or one that warrants several days of physician observation. The manual is a symptom-based, standardized collection of guidelines that have been reviewed and approved by a medical staff, said Sue Irby, management engineer at Queen's. Price emphasized that the 24-hour hotline does not take the place of doctors, nor is it designed to take the place of the police emergency 911 line in immediate or potentially life-threatening situations. The program also handles questions on general health care, including such topics as diet and exercise.

It can clarify questions on over-the-counter medication, self-administered medical tests and medication, and "miracle cures" such as wonder diets, bust developers and hair replacement creams. Also stored in the computer software is a list of community health agencies that the nurse can refer callers to, such as stop-smoking clinics, spouse abuse programs and groups such as Alcoholics Anomymous. 605 S. Your child awakens you, saying he doesn't feel well; his stomach hurts. Suddenly, he starts vomiting. You manage to quiet him and tuck him back to bed. Still, you're uneasy about leaving him to sleep it off, but calling a doctor seems a bit premature. For basic questions on "next step" recommendations: Ask-A-Nurse.

Ask-A-Nurse is a free health hotline operated by Castle Medical Center and the Queen's Medical Center, and offers a variety of health information. Operating out of a two-room downtown office, the service is staffed by two registered nurses 24 hours a day, according to Linda Price, Ask-A-Nurse manager. Price formerly worked as a nurse with Castle and has worked in the emergency room for 10 years as charge nurse of the emer- gency department. Ask-A-Nurse uses a computer software program to aid callers with physician referrals and in- formation on community resources and health care questions such as the hypothetical situation of the -Z youngster with a stomach ache. Sandwiched between the office's -two computer terminals is a shelf ''of medical resources topped by a "No Smoking" sign.

Alongside each terminal is a three-ring binder that serves as a backup system in case machines fail.
