FIRST EDITION Pantagraph Saturday, May 23, 1998 A5 MEMORIAL DAY '98 Area communities set Memorial Day services By Pantagraph staff Central Illinois communities will celebrate the Memorial Day holiday with parades, ceremonies and a variety of other activities. Following is a summary of those events. LIVINGSTON COUNTY Pontiac The Memorial Day observance will include a parade through the downtown area and a ceremony Monday at the Southside Cemetery. The parade line-up will be at 9:30 a.m. at Central School and step-off will be at 10 a.m.

The parade will proceed on Main to Madison Street; west to Mill Street; south on Mill Street to the bridge for a brief ceremony; continue south on Mill to South Street; then east to the cemetery for the memorial service. Speaker of the Day for the memorial service will be state Rep. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, who was recognized in 1994 by the Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance commissions for outstanding service, hard work and dedication to Illinois veterans. This year's parade marshals are Rockie Roach and Doyle Hedrick with Eldon Phillis as honorary marshal. Presidents of the day are VFW Post 886 Commander Ron Miller, AMVETS Post 116 Commander Roger Russell and American Legion Post 78 Commander Ed Carstens.

Honorary president is Alonzo Clay. The Pontiac High School band, directed by Keith Schminck; the Pontiac Municipal Band, directed by Richard Alderman; the Pontiac Elementary School band, under the direction of Laura Ramseyer; and the St. Mary's band, directed by Colleen Rapp, will provide music for marching and at the memorial services. Navanna Ahrends will be soloist. In case of rain, services' will be conducted in the Central School gym.

Fairbury A. Memorial Day service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Monday at Graceland Cemetery. John Boyce, commander of the Fairbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9789, will serve as master of ceremony, while Chaplain William Frisby will offer a prayer. The main address will be given by Terry Vance, membership director of the VFW Department of Illinois, followed by a wreathlaying ceremony conducted by Rita Vaughan of the American Weather may be wet Planning to attend a Memorial Day parade or veterans observance this weekend? Showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout much of Central Illinois. LOGAN COUNTY Atlanta Memorial Day events Monday will begin with the United Methodist Men's Breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., followed by the Boy Scout Cake Bake Auction, both at the firehouse. The Atlanta Community Band will play at 9:45 a.m.; from 10:30 to 11 a.m. the Veteran's Memorial Ceremony will be held and at 11 a.m. fire truck rides will begin -all three events at the library. Also beginning at 11 a.m.

will be the Hawes Grain Elevator demonstrations and the Flying Feet Cloggers will dance on Race Street in front of the library. At 11:30 a.m. children's games will begin behind the library and the VFW Auxiliary luncheon will begin at the fire house, followed by folk singing by Job Conger at the firehouse. Tractor show awards will be given at 12:15 p.m. at the elevator.

At 12:30 p.m. elevator demonstrations will resume. Afternoon events also include a parade of tractors and children's parade on Race Street at 1 p.m.; a community variety show following the parade and raffle drawings- both events at the library. Washington Bloomington Street SALVATION B-N to honor sacrifices of war American Legion leader Jordan to head parade By Pantagraph staff Through a variety of events and ceremonies, area residents will gather on Memorial Day to recognize the sacrifices of the nation's veterans. In the Twin Cities, the annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Front and Madison streets in downtown Bloomington with the University High School band kicking off the event with the national anthem.

The parade will proceed Anthony west to Lee Jordan Street, head south on Lee to Wood Street, and then travel west on Wood, ending at the Miller Park bandstand. Leading the way will be the National Commander of the American Legion, Anthony G. Jordan, along with state commanders of the legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets, the Central Illinois Chapter of VietNow and the Marine Corps League Central Illinois Leathernecks. There also will be local, state and national dignitaries, high school bands, floats, military vehicles and marching units. At the conclusion of the parade, there will be a combined ceremony at the bandstand, including a speech by Jordan and WASHINGTON MADISON FRONT ST.

Start 5 5 WOOD ST. LEE CENTER NIVW Miller Park the invocation by the Rev. Ron Johnson of Colfax United Church. Adrienne Watson of Normal, who will represent Illinois in the upcoming American Coed Contest, will speak about the American flag. She is a descendant of Betsy Ross.

In addition, Jordan will speak in support of the Flag Amendment and will host a veterans information fair from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at VFW Post 454, 1001 E. Lincoln Normal. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be at the National Guard Armory, 1616 S. Main Bloomington.

Other events taking place Monday include: The Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a wreath-laying ceremony and short prayer service at 8 a.m. at the World War II monument on the east side of the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Bloomington. The VFW will host a wreath- Table Chairs Convergence Units Convergence Sectionals Computer Desks and Workstations FREE DELIVERY Martins ME laying ceremony and other services at the Soldiers Monument in Miller Park immediately after the bandstand ceremony. The veterans then will travel to the Danvers Cemetery where they will hold a memorial service at the John H. Kraus burial site.

The VFW Post is named in his honor. The American Legion Louis E. Davis Post 56 will stage its annual ceremony at 11:15 a.m. at the Park Hill Cemetery monument in Bloomington. There will be a wreath laying by DAR and a prayer service.

The main speaker will be Mike Furgeson, area service representative for the Veterans Administration. Furgeson joined the Marines in 1966 and served in Viet- nam until 1968. At 11:20 a.m., the American Legion Carl S. Martin Post 635 will host a ceremony at Randolph Cemetery in Heyworth in honor of Martin and another at noon at Bloomington's Evergreen Cemetery. The Central Illinois chapter of VietNow will hold its ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

at the KoreanVietnam Memorial at Miller Park. The ceremony will be dedicated to the memorial's 10th anniversary. There will be a wreath laying ceremony and the guest speakers will be Veterans Assistance Commission Chairman Sammy Ferrara and McLean County Board member Paul Segobiano. Talk of the town.
