Today's float riders are just as boisterous, throwing Moon Pies and trinkets to the spectators.

"We go out and have a good time," said marketing manager David Poole of Azalea Travel. Poole said tourists coming to Mobile for Mardi Gras may want to consider a group tour on Gray Line or Memorable Mobile Tours. But he said packaged tours of the city are few in number. .1 I axt la a if 1 1 J- I T- Wfcat T77T JM I JE Ml THE NURSERY NOOK 2018 Ireland Grove Road Bloomlngtoo 663-7463 Across from TGI Fridays Oil Brickyard Drive Authorized Dealer of Childcraft Legacy "OUTTA THIS WORLD!" The ship upon which the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II was moved back to Pearl Harbor last year, and opened as a memorial on Jan.

29. Visitors to Pearl Harbor reach the "Big Mo" by riding a shuttle from a ticketing area at the USS Bowfin Memorial to the pier on Ford Island. On the shuttle, a recording using the radio format of the era sets the stage for the visit. Once on board, visitors can wan-. der the 887-foot ship's decks, view-: ing the nine big guns that became its signature feature as well as the flying bridge, which offers a panoramic view of Pearl Harbor.

On a lower deck, two plaques mark where the surrender ceremony took place on Sept. 2, 1945. Inside, open areas include the wardroom, officer's quarters, armory and showerrestroom facili-, ties where 2,400 sailors lived at sea. 'Eventually, other areas will be opened as well. Eighteen days after the signing ceremony, the Missouri docked at Pearl Harbor.

The Missouri was decomissioned in 1955, recommis-sioned in 1986, then decommissioned again in 1992. Admission to the Missouri Memorial is $10 for adults, $6 for children; for military visitors, $8 for adults, $5 for children. The Sunday before Fat Tuesday is Joe Cain Day, which features parades by groups not associated with Mardi Gras royalty. They celebrate the memory of Joseph Still-well Cain, who is credited with reviving the carnival after the Civil War. The city was disillusioned and discouraged under the Union occupation and the carnival was put on hold. In February 1866, Cain put on a Chickasaw Indian outfit, got into a coal wagon pulled by a mule and TTi li l4fawJ1' 'A A JUL rii'MiViil'ii-ln-ilf Shakespeare 4.7-xtsn-3o ll) LOVe 7 00 9 15 gShp'S all thai 3 00 5 7:15 9:15 11:15 sne an vw sun-coo 3:005 007 .159.15 you've Gotnaii Sat-1 00 4 30 7 15 9:30 11:45 Ion, Hanks MigRyanE 4:30 7:15 9:30 USTnSM (PG13) Sun-1 45 5 00 7:30 9 45 i i i I iTifTw 'Hl "Hiaviir'i saving nrhitr, 00 4:15 7:30 10 45 private ryan sun.100415730 IfJl Sal-1 00 4:00 7:00 9 30 11:45 illll (PG1 3) Sun-1 400 7,00 9:30 2:154:30 7:159:4511:45 Kl Sun-12 00 2:15 4:30 7:15 9:45 at first sight msLt Sal.aun-12:00 4:45 9 30 45 7.30 ENEMY DF, THE TATE El s1' 4:30 7:00 9:30 JcAfrasf- Sat.aun-2.30 4:45 7:00 9:15 GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE "THIS IS THE JJ.IM NO From B1 tend to spill over into Mobile for parades put on by such groups as the Fifty Funny Fellows, the Stripers, the Polka Dots and the Comic Cowboys, among others. In general, however, Mobilians like their own Mardi Gras, which is not as crowded as New Orleans.

Hotels fill up quickly, especially along the downtown parade routes. Downtown Holiday Inn general manager Russell Block said most of the 1,000 hotel rooms in the downtown area are booked far in advance three months to a year. Mobile residents tend to claim the rooms first to save the long walk from their homes to the pa-r a routes. "The majority of them are local because of the IF YOU GO: For further information about Mardi Gras in Mobile, phone 1-800-5-MO-BILE or visit the Web site: www.mobile.org balls and parades," Block said. "We also get a lot of people from Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana." During the two weeks of parades, he said, room rates go up because hotels have to hire extra security for the party crowd.

There are 5,000 additional rooms in the outlying areas and the Mobile Civic Center Parking lot turns into an RV and motor home campground for two weeks during the celebration. Roots of the Mardi Gras organizations, which stage the balls and parades, run deep. The legend of King Felix in the 1800s became so popular that it was adopted by New Orleans, which called their monarch King Rex. The organizations or "mystic societies" attempt to keep their memberships a secret and still have separate kings and queens for blacks and whites. "Everybody respects it and loves it," said Scott, who is black.
