Bock has created a couple's pattern dance which was published recently in "Country Dance Lines," a dance magazine published in Woodacre, Calif. "The dance is getting national recognition. Garth even got a call from Bath, England, from a couple who are going to perform the dance, The Harwood, at a county fair there," Ms. Sigler said. The dance is named for the street that Bock lives on in Bloomington.

Couples' pattern dancing is done mostly in a side-by-side position, Ms. Sigler explained. "The dances are becoming very popular in this area," she said. Diamonds and Spurs performs in the area for benefits, at fairs and festivals, schools, at dances, organization functions and parties. Every year Bock does a program for DARE at the LeRoy schools.

The group also gives dance instructions at the YWCA on a regular basis. There are open classes from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Country Nights. "Just walk in and join the group," Ms. Sigler said.

Line dance and couples' dance lessons are also conducted from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at Tri-Lakes Recreation Area with a fee of $3, payable at the door. There is no sign-up or pre-registration. For a performance, all four instructors usually are on hand with a group of 10 or 15 dancers. "We once danced non-stop for 45 minutes on pavement in 95-degree temperatures," Ms.

Sigler said. The dancers "opened" for singer Debi Miles when she performed at 1 Tri-Lakes. Bock choreographed a dance for her called, "Miles Ahead." "We all choreograph new dances," Ms. Sigler said. "We enjoy dancing.

If we're in a place that has a floor we'll dance on it!" Also, the Friday and Saturday cover charge at the hall is $3.50, and the Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday cover is $2.50. The dance hall was the 1995 Illinois Country Music Associ- ation's "Country Night Spot of the Year" award rather than the 1996 winner. 31 min. LOS ANGELES (AP) Alfred Sheinwold, one of the foremost experts on bridge whose syndicated columns on the card game appeared in 200 newspapers, has died. He was 85. Sheinwold died at a Sherman Oaks hospital on Saturday after suffering a stroke the previous day, said Ellie Pynes, his stepdaughter. The London native often referred to as the "King of Bridge" also wrote 13 best-selling books on the game.

He said he began playing bridge "to escape dull philosophy lectures" while a student at the City College of New York. Despite his penchant for cutting classes and playing cards, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in economics. But he soon was hooked on bridge.
