"Nevertheless, in compliance with these rules, I must direct you to limit the public comments of your law enforcement personnel regarding criminal eases to those allowed by the ruleS;" Some see the Supreme Court's decision as an unreasonable burden on prosecutors by making them accountable for statements made by others. vwiyi By KEVIN SIMPSON Pantagraph staff McLean County State's Attorney Charles Reynard is trying to strike a balance between a defendant's right to a fair trail and the public's right to know. In response to newly imposed rules by the Illinois Supreme Court, Reynard issued a letter asking area law enforcement to be cautious with public disclosure of information. The rules state public prosecutors shall exercise "reasonable care" to prevent investigators and law enforcement personnel from making comments that prosecutors are not allowed to make. "We hope to strike a balance that keeps prosecutors and law enforcement within the ethical limits of the Supreme Court ruling and still be accountable to the public's right to know," Reynard said Thursday. Bloomington and Normal police have forwarded Reynard's letter to their respective legal counsels.

Neither department has made changes pertaining to police reports or comments on investigations, and McLean County Sheriff Dave Owens said he foresees no immediate changes for his department. Under the revised rules, basic information such as the identity and address of the accused still must be released.
