By MARY ANN FORD Pantagraph staff Dave Ford went to work at his midtown office about 9 a.m. Tuesday not realizing what had happened at the World Trade Center just four miles away. When his brother, Bob, called to tell him, he was in disbelief. He hung up the phone arid went to look out his office window on the 31st floor. "I saw smoke coming out of one tower, then I could see the second plane," he said.

The next thing he knew, the plane crashed into the second tower. was a huge, orange fireball. I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he said during a phone call just hours later. But the nightmare wasn't over. Gathered around a radio their only news source because Internet access had been cut and no one could use the phones Ford learned that the tower he had watched get hit by a plane had collapsed.

"I went to the window, and all you could see was smoke," he said. "It was drifting over Brooklyn." A short time later, he watched as the second tower collapsed. Ford said the towers would have been filled with employees at that time of the day. "Especially downtown," he said. "They get there early." While many buildings were evacuated in the wake of the crashes, Ford said his 40-story building was not among them.

Because all tunnels and bridges into the city were closed off, Ford, like many other commuters, couldn't even go home and would be forced to find a place to stay in the city. "There's nowhere to go," he said.
