www.pantagraph.com The Pantagraph Thursday, September 2, 2004 B5 OBITUARIES Godfrey teen gets 2 perfects on ACT ASSOCIATED PRESS ALTON Not many students ace the ACT college entrance exam, but 17-year-old Sophie Hilgard has done it twice. Hilgard earned a perfect score of 36 on the exam last winter and spring. The Godfrey native chose to take it in the winter and then was required to take it again in April as part of the Prairie State Achievement Examination. Only 16 other students in the state got perfect scores on the spring exam. "It just kind of comes to me," Hilgard said of her academic achievements, which also include earning all A's and one A-minus at Alton High School.

The A-minus was in physical education. The high school senior, who also ranks first in her class, prefers math and science to other subjects. "There's no guess work. It's so concrete. It's either right, or it's wrong," she said.

"I'm not into that touchy-feely kind of subject matter, 1 namely English." Hilgard's father, James Hilgard, said he and his wife encourage Sophie and her older brother to work hard and achieve. "We do try to set an example of being involved with your job or whatever your career is," James Hilgard said. "We try to maintain an atmosphere at home that stimulates thought and discussion." Sophie won't yet say where she wants to go to college. Despite her perfect scores and immaculate grades, she said she doesn't want to mention top schools and then get rejected from them. Grandma pleads guilty to scamming ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO A 76-year-old grandmother, already convicted of scamming car dealers throughout the Chicago area, has admitted using her apparent frailty to defraud an Elgin car dealership by writing a bad check.

Betty Gooch of Algonquin appeared Tuesday in a Cook County courtroom and pleaded guilty to one count of theft. Gooch has been in jail since April after pleading guilty in McHenry County Court to a felony charge of deceptive practice. She also has finished an 18-month prison sentence for writing a bad check to a car dealership in Crystal Lake last year. Circuit Judge John Scotillo could sentence Gooch to probation for the Elgin case or she could get up to seven years in prison and a $25,000 fine when she is sentenced Sept. 13.

Gooch wrote bad checks to ten dealerships in the Chicago area for 12 vehicles between July 2000 and March 2004, authorities said. On Nov. 3, while out on bond in the Crystal Lake case, Gooch allegedly used her age to scam Elgin Toyota, prosecutors said. CENTRAL ILLINOIS Milton S. Adolphson WASHBURN Milton S.

An ongoing audit by a firm that specializes in forensic accounting showed Burns also cashed another $36,000 in district checks during the 2003-04 school year, for a total of $57,000.

Superintendent Ed Hightower said the district is insured for the losses. Burns was not authorized by the district to deposit or cash checks at the bank, and the bank was not authorized to cash checks from Burns, Hightower said. "None of these actions was consistent with the district's internal control system," he said. Burns, a 27-year employee of the district, has been suspended, but Hightower would not say whether the suspension was with or without pay.
