Ken Lowe had an idea that every room in the house and the grounds outside could have its own television show. The idea became Home Garden Television. Since it went on the air a decade ago, HGTV has become one of America's most recognized cable brands, reaching 87 million households and sprouting sister networks for E.W.

Paschke died in his sleep on Thanksgiving at the home he shared with his daughter, Sharon, who said heart problems ran in the family and that physicians had noted a murmur in her father's heart. Paschke recently appeared in the Twin Cities to attend the opening of his show "Prints" at Illinois Wesleyan University. It ran from Sept. 2 to 27.

Paschke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was steeped in the abstract expressionism that was the dominant American art movement in the 1950s. But when he emerged as an artist in the early 1960s, Paschke became a leader of a new school called the Chicago Imagists. Although Paschke and his colleagues rejected pure abstraction to return their focus on the human body and other recognizable imagery, their paintings often took on a mysterious look, mingling elements of dreamlike surrealism, nonwestern artistic traditions and the icons of popular culture. Paschke, who was considered to be the best known of the Imagists, was known for his bright, almost phosphorescent colors. His works are in public collections from the Art Institute of Chicago to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to the Musee d'Art Moderne Nationale in Paris.

In addition to his prolific painting career, Paschke taught art for more than 30 years at such schools as Barat College, the Art Institute, Columbia College and Northwestern University. Paschke is survived by his wife, his daughter, a son, one granddaughter, a brother and his mother. "I have never seen 'The never saw 'Sex and the never saw 'Desperate Why, I can watch 'Divine Kim Garretson, an editor for the Web magazine LivingHome.com, says HGTV is also a favorite in the homebuilding and remodeling trade. "This might seem surprising since the network shows are aimed at consumers, and mostly. women. But if you think about it, the industry's product is one that only a TV network can bring alive and really show off," Garretson says. Ed Spray, the retiring president of Scripps Networks, which oversees HGTV, says within two months of starting HGTV "we knew we had something." In 1997, HGTV did its first viewer call-in show, with no promotion.

The network had 10,000 calls in two hours. Later that year, it broadcast its Web address for the first time. The computer jammed with 50,000 e-mails from 47 states. By the next year, HGTV began making a profit more than a year ahead of schedule. Meantime, Scripps has acquired the Food Network, and started two others: DIY-Do It Yourself Network, and Fine Living.

HGTV and Scripps Networks have gone from six employees a decade ago to 650 in Knoxville alone, with offices in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and programming reaching more than 20 countries.
