But many are more familiar with "Rosa Parks," the hit song by the hip-hop group OutKast, than her full story, said Renada Johnson, a 25-year-old graduate student at Bowie State University in Maryland, who met Parks in 1997. The attack killed two senior police officers who were teachers at a police academy. Another was wounded, Khan said. By Amir Shah ASSOCIATED PRESS KABUL, Afghanistan Militants killed six civilians in a botched ambush on a U.S. troop convoy south of Kabul, officials said Tuesday, while to the east, attackers gunned down two senior police officers. The assaults, along with the discovery of a cache of bombs in a Kabul junkyard, underlined the threats to the heavily guarded city of 4 million that is home to thousands of foreigners but has been spared much of the violence that has wracked Afghanistan.

Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanekzai said militants were suspected of plotting to use the bombs against international peacekeepers based in the capital. The attacks near Kabul came within hours of each other, though it was unclear whether they were coordinated. In the first assault late Monday, rebels fired rockets at a U.S. military convoy 10 miles south of the capital. The rockets missed their target and instead hit three cars carrying civilians, killing six Afghans and wounding three, said Khan Mohammed, police chief in Logar province.

He said a child was among the dead. The cars were traveling behind five military Humvee vehicles on a main north-south road when they were hit by two rockets and small-arms fire, Mohammed said. The police chief said extra security forces rushed to the area and surrounded a run-down fort where the assailants were thought to be hiding. The second assault came just before dawn Tuesday.
