occurred Tues day afternoon at about 4 on tho farm of Mr John Donahue four miles northwest of Wapella Mr William Cox aged 50 and his sou William aged were engaged In sinking a well Air Cox was at the time above and was drawing up the bucket The son William was down in the well digging when he felt the effects of gas He immediately signaled to his father to pull him up which the father commenced to do When the young man had been raised up only about ten feet he fell out of the bucket ad The father not quite re alizing the terrible danger immediately went down in the bucket to bring up his son Hr started up with the dead body of his son in his arms but alter ascending about ten feet he also died and both bodies fell to tho bottom of the fateful well Ncighljors soon gathered and were horri fied to see the dead bodies of father and son lying in two or three feet of water bodies were finally gotten out by means of long hooks as no one of course dared risk his life going down into the deadly drouth continue They obtain water from the city from tho tank of the Big our and Iake Eric roads and from the ice factory when it is in opera tion as it is not just at present i he ice factory alone has to spare daily about forty tons of water It is fortunate indeed that within tho past few years as the result of repeated dry spells many deep wells have been sunk upon tho farms which wells have pene trated water strata which arc not affected by the ordinary or even extra ordinary spells of drouth Even with these sources of supply the watering of stock is at present accompanied by grave difficul ties and much extra labor armers in all parts of central Illinois are hauling water in some oases long distances So dry have tho grass the stubble and the standing corn become that field fires especially along tho railways and tho country roads traversed by traction en gines have become quite frequent Some severe losses and the dav bv There have been several fires in the brush of tho wooded sections and a genuine for est fire is one of the possible things of the future that would not be surprising Tho woods are now ablaze in Missouri only a few miles from St Louis The following from Col fax When the town was first laid out a largo tract of land was Included in the corpora tion limits presumably for the purosj of making a healthy show of population Subsequently the corporation limits of the town were contracted leaving out a largo numlier of acres of land that were not sub ject to municipal taxes About two years ago County Clerk Maxton was requested to extend the Colfax municipal taxes so ns to cover tho land formerly included in the city limits Mr Maxton questioned his author ity and Judge Tipton who was acting for the farmers who resisted the taxation ob jected to the extension of the taxes A suit was ronimetiecd against Mr Maxton to compel him to extend the taxes and Judge Sample decided that the taxes should not be extended The case was appealed to tho appellate court and subsequently to the supreme court and both courts affirmed the decision of Judge Sample The Cemetery Araoclat ton Must Pay of Bloomington vstho Blooming ton Cemetery association About three vents ago a special assessment was levied nv he city of Bloomington against the Bloomington Cemetery association for a strip of brick sidewalk laid on the north side of Lincoln street near tho southeast corner of the cemetery The assessment amounted to about $70 The cemetery as sociation contested the judgment declaring that the sidewalk in question was outside the city
